Pinoys vs Thais

Right now filipinos take it in boxing. They are just more willing to travel anywhere to prove it. I do believe however that a lot of people are underestimating the Thais calling them nothing more than fighters protected by home cooking.

ALthough this has some factual basis, they are much more willing to travel than the other asian boxing powerhouses in Japan and Korea. I mean you all know of Wonjongkam's suspect travel record but you should look at how often Japanese and Korean fighters fight overseas.

All three have good boxing traditions but their lack of willingness to travel to gain exposure has really hurt them.

 

look at the fighters then have defeated. if you can recognize 3 fighters that pong beat, be happy.

 

Good point very true:good right now the filipinos are willing travel to the states while is good for boxing if the other asian countrys follow suite it will be even better.

the philippines' advantage is that they have pac a fighter who'll be at the top5 p4p in almost everyone's rankings of course except boxrec. the thais have no one to rally around. filipino boxing should thank pac and his efforts. he single handedly gave life to the up and coming philippines vs mexico rivalry which gave chances to the other filipino fighters. you think gerry would have gotten a shot at de leon or gonzales if it wasn't for pac? hell no

but thailand has no one now. pong was their man but then he was defeated so at this point in time, the boxing world, IMO cares about the filipino boxers more than thais. i'm not in taking anything away from the thais, they are a great bunch. as we saw in last year's foty, they also have tremendous will. but they don't have enough matches on american tv and ppv. ask the casual boxing fans what they remember about thailand and boxing and they might say de leon ktfo of the thai dude in their rematch

 

Chatchai Sasakul is another. He was the world champion that Pacquiao dethroned to win his first world title.

 

Gerry already had a name before Manny came into the picture. And, Manny, having turned his back on Golden Boy Promotions in favor of Top Rank, would even possibly have harmed Gerry's chances for a return to fame because GBP wouldn't take him seriously anymore.

Pone Kingpetch, Venice Borkorsor, Chartchai Chionoi, Khaosai Galaxy, Medgoen Singsurat

My favorite Pinoy champs, including ones who weren't well publicized:
Gabriel "Flash" Elorde, Pedro Adique, Francisco Guilledo ("Pancho Villa"), Ben Villaflor, Ceferino Garcia, Frank Cedeno, Rolando Navarette, Luisito Espinosa, Nonito Donaire. Of course, Manny Pacquiao and Gerry Penalosa.

 

I'm not sure, but muay thai came along only in the 20th century. The Philippines already had kuntaw, silat, and arnis de mano much earlier. Then there's Yaw-Yan (sayaw kamatayan), a more recently developed and very effective martial art.

the Thais seem to be better athletes, but the Pinoys are better schooled and have the better fighters right now...
