How would u rate these guuys? If your wondering which Castillo. Im not talking about Chucho or Ruben im talking about Jose L Castillo.
1. Cuevas-Just a GREAT champion in his prime who really destoyed some good op. It took a Hearns to beat him after he was a little burnt out due to style. 2.Pintor-also one of my favs of all time. Just love his style of fighting. In a 1982 preview of his fight vs. Gomez in KO mag., Marley calls Pintor's style "That of a guy who was jumped by a gang in an alley. He is an alley fighter and his code in the ring is simple savagery". Great stuff. Chandler is SOOOO lucky he didn't get his wish and have to taste those bodyshots. 3. Roman 4. Chiquita 5.Castillo 6.Zarragozza-Who Pintor was set to fight in 1984 when he suddenly retired. He came back a while later though. They almost all do.
1. Ricardo Lopez - A must on an Anarci list. 2. Lupe Pintor - Really good Bantamweight champion, fought with a good style. Has some really good wins and a solid reign. 3. Gilberto Roman - Almost level with Cuevas and Gonzalez, I like Roman better as he looks so much better on film than Cuevas. A really complete boxer-puncher always moving. Solid Super-Flyweight champion, never really dominant for a long spell but had a few reigns and some excellant wins. 4. Humberto Gonzalez - Top 5 Light-Flyweight of all time. Good boxer and puncher but lacked a solid chin. Just when it looked like he could be great he would lose. Inconsistent but was dominant after beating Carbajal until running into the Sorjungtung guy. 5. Pipino Cuevas - Very young dominant champion but not alwys top class opponents. Very in-istent and has losses to lesser men. 6. Daniel Zaragoza - Was around for donkeys ages. Nice textbook stylist although never a great H2H fighter IMO. Has some big wins and some bad losses but his longevity and world title status gives him the edge over Castillo IMO. 7. Ruben Castillo - Top Featherweight and SFW contender in the late 70s early 80s, which was pretty deep. Run up a really good unbeaten streak and only really lost to the two best guys in his prime - Arguello and Sanchez. Apart from that he dosent have too many good wins to really rate very high. I feel I have been harsh on him though, he is a better fighter than Zaragoza IMO.
Absolutely quality post. I'd rate Ricardo Lopez about 3rd. Romans resume trumps his but Lopez is even more aesthetically pleasing than Roman IMO. Pintor top Your analysis of Cuevas is spot on, although I think he's beautiful to watch, in a bone crushing human-annihilation kinda way :bbb
Ok first off i didnt put Ricardo Lopez because he is clearly better than these other excellent fighters, but Lopez was an All time great, while these other fighters are borderline. Also i should have specified that i was talking about Jose L Castillo not Ruben(Mex American). I made them all Mexican on this list cause i wanted to get a feel for this 2nd tier of great Mexican(national) fighters. IMO these guys are top 20 Mexicans (not sure about Zarragoza?), i just dont know in what exact order. As for Pipino well his losses were either when he was green and young or faded and past it. Actually Hearns is the only one who beat a prime Cuevas. Actually Cuevas has good scalps Espada 3x, Gray,Weston,Shields,Ranzany,Backus were all very good fighters i stronger opposition than most former champs. My list might look like this Pintor Chiquita Castillo Cuevas Zarragoza Roman
nice list.. I don't think Cuevas was burnt out when he fought Hearns. Hearns burnt him out for later.
Thanks. The Lopez one was a joke. I would probably put him top though. JL Castillo would be just behind Cuevas then for me.
