(I was actually up at 4:30am but my WiFi had been shut off; how do you like them apples? I could have watched and RBR'ed on the much tinier screen of my phone live, but...f that)

note: SSR vs. Ruaviking wasn't even the main event of this card (that was Thananchai Charunphak vs. Roland Jay Osorio Biendima for the WBC Asian Boxing Council flyweight title), so these old boys fought very early this morning in quite the plummet from grace for them, SSR in particular.

Pipat Chaiporn vs. Wisaksil Wangek, 8 rounds @ super bantamweight

 

The fight everybody cares about starts exactly 90 minutes in. ^

 

Wangek looks old for a lighter weights boxer; Chaiporn (despite only two years' difference between them) looks ancient.

 

Round 1

Wangek with a firm southpaw jab into the chest, just slicing past Chaiporn's left jab. Wangek buries a huge left uppercut on the body while Chaiporn is trying a left hook up top and Wangek's lands with audible authority, prompting both commentators to harmonize "Oooh-whee!". Wangek is outboxing Chairpon easily in what's mostly a mid-range jab battle, southpaw beating the orthofox. Chaiporn circling away unsteadily, his balance kind of wonky as he keeps needing to reset his feet and always seems to have one leg akimbo, but he is slipping well above the waist when Wangek mixes in power shots behind the right jab. Wangek goes back to body snatching and lumps Chaiporn up a few times, putting him on the run. Climbing shoeshine by Chaiporn, from waist to shoulders, clapping loudly against Wangek's sides and arms. Wangek responds with steadier pressure, digging with hard left uppercuts downstairs. Chaiporn skewers him with a lead right on the nose dashing in and quickly out again but Wangek walks him into the ropes with more body shots. Chaiporn clinches.

Round 2

I was about to say, maybe this was even on tape delay when it first broadcasted at 4:30am, because that commercial break after the 1st round was FAR more than just the usual minute (it was like 4), and lo & behold, the broadcast picks up in literally the final seconds of the second round (clock at like 2:56), with Chaiporn getting smacked around. So that whole round just never aired, because somebody messed up and kept the commercials running through it. They show highlights, though, and clearly Wangek had been taxing dat ass for pretty much the whole thing.

Round 3

Wangek is immediately picking up where he left off in that three or four seconds we were shown of the previous round, where Chaiporn was hunched up and slouched over taking heavy fire. Wangek bulldozes him into the ropes with big right hooks and looping lefts, head hunting. Chaiporn slaps a wide right at the body and then cuffs a left hook on Wangek's ear to get free of the ropes, and while Wangek is focusing on body shots at this same moment their ankles get tangled up and Wangek nearly goes down. Chaiporn himself staggers free across the ring after grabbing the bent over and wobbly Wangek by the waist and turning him to face the other way (this move causes another, milder "ooh-whee" from one commentator). Wangek pursues. 1-2 into the arms, followed by a vicious right hook on the body. Chaiporn answers with a left hook up top, caught on the back of the glove. Wangek keeps throwing with both hands and the right hook is ducked with Chaiporn lowering his chin and leaning forward, but that puts him in the path of a shoveling left. Down, toppled on his back like an insect wriggling his legs. Beats the count. Not even a minute gone in the round. Wangek wants to close the show and pounces. Punches in bunches. Chaiporn getting hammered on the ropes. Body and head shots. Chaiporn tries flurrying back but badly overpowered. Down again by the ropes. Beats the count at seven. HUGE left on the body from Wangek. Throwaway right jabs up top and heavy lefts on the navel. Chaiporn somehow hanging in there. Chaiporn dipping and shrimping himself up against the ropes. Wild 1-2 by Chaiporn over Wangek's head. A few more left hands poking into the body and Chaiporn goes down from accumulation to a knee. The ref waves it off.

TKO3!!

 

I'm slightly disappointed Chaiporn wasn't able to hang on for a minute. 10-6 or wider rounds are such a rare and delightful thing, I always root for stoppages to be forestalled another round if that means getting one.

 

...correction, one year's difference between them. Chaiporn was born in August 1985, making him 37. For some reason the onscreen tale-of-the-tape graphic they showed had them at 36 & 38. Oh well.

Wangek doesn't look prime by any means but in more than just physical appearance does he seem substantially younger than Chaiporn. He still moves like a fighter. Chaiporn had flashes and showed toughness but it was mostly just desperation. His instincts are shot to hell.

 

IDGAF about the rest of the card and especially not with the outcomes already decided earlier this morning, so...that's it for me. I've let people know how SSR looked (and the video is embedded in the OP for people with time and inclination to see for themselves, along with the other bouts), commitment fulfilled.

Thai cards are such a pain in the ass in general, because they never show fighters' names onscreen in the Latin alphabet (not that I've usually heard of 90% of them anyway), and there's almost never a complete bout listing on their BoxRec event pages.

 

Somebody on Twitter said they want to see a SSR vs. Chocolatito trilogy fight. Eh, not sure that's the move for Wangek tbh. He certainly had his number in 2017 but it's one of those weird boxing cases where Chocolatiato has caught a late career second wind while Wangek is...still okay, but not a shadow of what he was. He's far closer to shot, and as destructive as he looked today versus Chaiporn, he's still probably operating on a lower level than the Chocolatito that lost the rematch & rubbermatch to JFE.

He could far more safely milk making money domestically taking on a slew of fellow former big names in the lower weights. Ruenroeng rematch, a couple of the long-of-tooth CP Freshmarts in his range (super fly through super bantam) etc.
