Piper bounces back for win from Tweed Daily News - 8th Feb 2011 GOLD Coaster Les “Diamond” Piper (13-6-3) shone on Friday night, out-working fellow Contender Australia contestant Josh Clenshaw (29-19) over 10 hard-fought rounds in the light-heavyweight division. It was a good win for Piper, who was coming off a points defeat to Omar Shaick for the Queensland middleweight title. He seems a lot stronger at the heavier weight. In a highly anticipated heavyweight battle, Sydney’s Lucas Browne (3-0) scored a three-round knockout of Gold Coaster John Szigeti (8-2). Browne, known as “Big Daddy”, is a welcome edition to the domestic heavyweight ranks and is fun to watch. He has a cult following in Sydney and, matched right, should spark plenty of interest in the division. He needs to work on a lot but an Australian title is a possibility. Olympian Ryan Langham (13-2) was given a good workout by Filipino Jack De Asis (21-18-4) winning a four-round decision. This content is protected ....Ryan Langham Ryan has 12-round talent. When he began as a 13-year-old Ryan looked a future world champion, but unfortunately the now 29-year-old is yet to take a national belt. I think he could easily out-box current Australian lightweight champion BW Smith, but he needs to fight longer than four rounds. Nerang super-middleweight prospect Tyrone Jones (4-0) took care of Sydney’s Armibur Singh (1-1), delivering a devastating-looking knockout in 1 minute 22 seconds. Singh came out hard and tagged Jones early but was then rocked before being backed in a corner where a barrage of head shots ended it.    WHILE many would prefer he hang up his gloves, three-time Australian heavyweight champ “Big” Bob Mirovic continues to campaign. Croatian born Bob (31-22-2), who turns 45 in a few weeks, won a six-round verdict over Tongan trialhorse Alipate Liava (4-6) at the Croatian Club in Punchbowl on Friday night.    IT’S a subject that always causes plenty of debate and I’m often asked where I’d rate Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather among the all-time greats. I compiled a top 100 greatest-ever a few years ago and recently revised it. Mayweather came in at 43, Pacquaio 48. There were better fighters in the past when there was only one world champion per division, like No.8 Sam Langford and No.12 Charley Burley who never even got to fight for a title.
Don't know what Piper was doing @ Middleweight. He's super middy/light heavy. However, some light heavies are touch too big for him. Had a bad motorbike accident a few years back, but has recovered well. Nice bloke.
Some drunks on another forum are talking about Piper replacing Clenshaw against Bryant in PABA middleweight title. Both would need to chop off arm & leg to make weight. Whoever matched the fight in the first place has also been hitting the bottle
Clenshaw was saying before the fight that if he wins he will be going after Sherrington.wonder if Piper will target Les now?
Piper v Clenshaw was a solid 12 rounder, plenty of great action. But what was obviuos is that Piper although outboxed Clenshaw convincingly could not stop him and really should have. Big respect for Clenshaw he fought a tough and smart fight for TGE mist part but also took some solid shots, nit really the kind of shots you want to see a veteran taking at this stage if his career. I would be surprised if he puts himself in another 10 rounder with the likes of a Piper again. Clenshaw is booked in against Bryant and he might fair better, perhaps win but he should consider where he is at and where the current crop of fighters up and commers are at.
Piper won't take the Bryant fight, He doesn't want to burn himself down to middle in the allocated time. I heard the call had been made tho. Also I am pretty sure he is not targeting Sherro at the moment. According to the Gold Coast Bulletin yesterday and what his trainer said.
Tweed News states that " Ryan Langham could easily outbox current Aust. lightweight champ Brett William Smith " Smith fights Langham's opponent Jack Asis on the Sunshine Coast this weekend 12/2/11. Should be a good guide to form. BW is also fighting Mick Shaw at Mansfield Tav. on 5/4/11 defending his title. Langham V BW would be a good match up. Hopefully it happens later this year. My money's on Smith if it happens.
My theory that Brett William Smith would beat Ryan Langham looks pretty shakey. Jack Asis who lost a 4 rounder on points to Langham 8 days ago has scored an 8th rd Tko over Smith last night in Maroochydore. " Tweed News " would no doubt be wearing a wry smile.
Langham has the ability to beat Smith every day of the week. can he carry a strategy through a fight though is the question that needs to be answered!
