Jones was a good fighter, I quite liked him.

Just feel his defense is to porous to go punch for punch with Cueves..At some point something has to give, either its some facial bone or his skin around the eyes burst open..I dont think he goes the rounds.

Jones would bleed one out and get stopped....however, the fact he had THAT left hook gives him a very good chance of beating the sometimes vulnerable Cuevas.

What a war this would've been! Cuevas win cuts round 6.

no way Jones is left standing; too much raw power by Cuevas.

If we're talking about the prime Cuevas -- as he was between 1976 and 1978 -- I believe Jones would be knocked out early. As someone here already mentioned, Cuevas's raw power would be too much for Jones to handle.

The way both these guys punch it might be a case of who lands first ! if its prime for Prime then Cuevas's Prime was as a much younger man, so Jones's added maturity of his prime would not do him any harm whatsoever, Jones also had a very hurtful Left Jab, and his streight right was a punch that flatteren many opponents, and at worst stated them on their way, Jones really was vicious when he had someone in trouble, as he showd against Hans Palm, Of Course Pipino was no different, Their was some suggestion that Jones was vunerable to the body, due to being hurt there by relative non-puncher Kerkland Laing, But Kirk was a very quick Puncher who could catch any Welter by surprise when on form, but of Course Jones caught up with him and despathed him, as he did also in the return, As we know McCory also had to run for his life against Jones, even Now when i see the 1st fight, Colin Just misses his Chin by a Whisker on Many occassions, even though i know the result, i still think he is going to catch Big Milt on the Button, of couse Jones remained a Whisker away and it was not to be, but he put a severe Melt on the Iceman, and This Jones would be a highly difficult assignment for a fighter in his early 20's who comes to trade and not to hide...

Pipino had enjoyed things pretty much his own way, blasting through faded names like Backus and Ranzany and beating "Boxers" like Espada and Western who were preoccupied with actually staying away from Pipino

But how would a Young Pipino do if he had to start taking his own medicine from a physically more mature Jones ? Truth to tell it is probably a case of who detonates on the Button first proceeds to mop up as both were usually great finishers

I have little doubt that Pipino would be the favourite, but i also think this would be a fight where the Less know Jones would be a good tip to spring an ambush, i like his extra maturity to assist him, Pipino comes from a hotbed of Boxing, but probably against the grain, i would go for the Welsh Dragon to Breath Fire and Brimstone and make it a little too hot for Pipino ! for me, The Pale Chiorboy looking Jones can spring an upset and win this. ( Tom Jones to sing the welsh Anthem before the fight ....and singing all over the Welsh Valleys afterwards. )

Good analysis and I can see this possibility.

Pete Ranzany was not "faded" at all. He was in his prime when he earned his title shot against Cuevas. As much as I like Jones, I cant see him trading blows with Cuevas. Pipino by kayo around the sixth.

La-Califa - You are quite correct, Ranzany was not Faded when he fought Pipino - But he did fade rather quickly once Pipino Nailed him in the second !

I tend to agree with area53 as well.Cuevas the favourite, but he would always be vulnerable stylistically to another good world class Welter with excellent power of his own.He probably doesn't have the long interrupted reign if he's fighting bangers like JOnes or Jose Luis Lopez multiple times, even if he does win the series.

Pipino takes this one in five rounds, but Colin makes it a close fight until the end.

A toughie with some smarts like randy shields was able to survive 15 rounds with Cuevas..he was the best second tier type of guy to pull off that feat vs Jose.

    Excellent alternative break down.

I saw a lot of Jones UK fights , he was something of a slow starter but once into his stride he was a heavy duty banger. Cuevas probaly detonates his dynamite first ,and wins by stoppage ,but its very possible he could walk into a Welsh Wizz-bang and hit the floor too. Cuevas for me but, if the odds were right ,I'd have a punt on Colin.

Whilst Cuevas was a level below the likes of Leonard,Hearns et al,he was one above Jones.

Cuevas by early rounds tko. Colin would make it competitive though.

Jones would cut open and get stopped before he can turn the fight around
