Two of the hardest hitting welterweights of all time. Who wins this matchup at 147? I know a lot of people will probably be picking Trinidad based on Cuevas' knockout loss to Hearns, but no way will it be that simple to Trinidad, and I actually feel Cuevas has more power. Thoughts?
cuevas may have had more power but Tito actually threw straight, technically sound punches. Trinidad had a better defense, quicker hands, was more sound mechanically, and better boxing skills. Of course Cuevas is a live dog but I think trinidad's superior skills show here and he gets Pipino out of there.
Cuevas likely did have a bit more power. He also had less technique and overall skill. He was, for the most part, just a banger, and a pretty wild one at that. Not much defense, pretty stiff, pretty awkward. Trinidad had somewhat shaky legs, but a better guard and better technique. I think it's an interesting brawl. Tito may go down, but I see him ending this one a bit later. Tito by KO.
I think tha tito would win this , like sweetpea said , cuevas was ver wild and raw. He obviously has the power to win by ko , but i still dont thin tito was ever hurt at 147 , just shaky early on. One could see tito going down within the first 3 rounds , but imo he would stop Cuevas. One thing that was proven at 147 was , standing in front of Trinidad gets you stopped , there werent any exceptions , maybe Cuevas is a level above the guys who tried brawling with him , but Trinidad could still stop LMWs and MWs also. PS , its realy difficult to say who hit harder , but i actualy think tito though
This is one of my favorite fantasy fights as both were devestating punchers. Cuevas had a slight edge in power in my opinion. But I'd take the guy with the shorter, more accurate shots (Trinidad) Cuevas would be very dangerous for Trinidad early on and I could see him dropping him somewhere in the first three rounds. But Trinidad would survive the early Cuevas onslaught and begin to connect with his more accurate shots upstairs and downstairs. Cuevas had below average defense and blocked a lot of punches with his face. He was known for having a very strong chin when he was a champion, but in the later stages of his career, the punishment decreased his punch resistance. I say a difference in class begins to show as Trinidad ends it in 7.
Alright , just nitpicking there , you knew what i meant , as if i meant just standing there , i meant trading with tito
But make no mistake. There are fighters who could brawl with Trinidad at WW historically and not only survive, but stop him.
I agree, it is one of the very hardest feats in ww history though . I dont wanna sell trinidad short , i dont just rate him as a great puncher , i think his power was devastating of the highest order , and his finishing is maybe on par with Joe Louis. Im not nuthugging , Trinidad never learnt how to cut off the ring , a great boxer with great side-to-side movement can win maybe with ease. I know his strengths and weaknesses , and when someone trades with him its not good for them. The only guys i think could fight with him imo at 147 would be Griffith , Walker , Robinson and maybe Leonard. I think if Hearns tried fighting with him Trinidad would stop him. And Gavilan might beat him going toe-to-toe , but neither would stop the other , would be a great fight. Maybe Tito wins ? You might have a different opinion , this just mine though
Well I think Hearns would stop Trinidad if they stood toe to toe. Mainly because I am pretty sure Hearns would get to him before Trinidad got to him.
Maybe , i think Hearns would have the better chance of getting to him first , faster and could do it from different angles. I just keep thinking that Hearns would turn it on , and then Trinidad would catch him in mid-trade-off and finish it
