The only decision would be whether or not to keep Cotto on life support.

    Cotto is not beating Cuevas.

    God damn Xplosive!

I have to agree with you though, Cuevas pounds through him. I have a feeling he would even make Cotto wilt and quit.

There is a difference between Cotto and Duran and HearnsMy gut feeling is that Cuevas knocks out Cotto. He was a big puncher and I think Cuevas would knock out Margarito also. I favor the older guys, so maybe I shouldn't comment. Cotto was good but he didn't do well against good sharp punchers.

That was 12 years ago when Cotto was still young and undefeated when I posted that.

Things have changed since then and we found out a few things about Miguel Cotto subsequently. I still favour him but I expect him to box Cuevas and avoid a brawl much like he did against Mosley and in the Margarito rematch. Cotto tended to fade late in fights and Cuevas carried his power late so I wouldn't rule out a late stoppage for him but I'll go with Cotto via close UD now.

    Cotto by decision.

Pipino may have had the power and engine to get to Cotto, but the Mexican's chin could be dented. Cotto would have the pronounced edge in terms of speed and skill, and he had enough power to keep Pipino honest through the early and middle rounds of the fight.

Cotto was stopped and hurt by Margarito and Cuevas hit like a sledge hammer. Pipino ko in 10 rds.

Not sure the pick is bad, but not sure the contrast lines up. Just watched this fight yesterday for some reason and future controversy aside Cotto was outboxing Margo early. Margarito did stop him late but it was cumulative, and attrition based. Cotto got rocked a few times, but stood in there taking them well. Margarito was throwing 100-135 punches per round, and I don’t think Cuevas has that high of a volume output.

Not saying Cuevas couldn’t or wouldn’t stop him, but if he does it will be power based rather than the high volume grind down of Margarito

Cuevas hits too hard and batters Cotto .
Cotto isnt a Hearns or Duran.
Good match up but Cotto leaves on his back or corner stopping it.

Cuevas wasnt overrated. People just remember him from the Hearns fight .
He annihilated his opponents. Harold Weston- broken jaw .Same Weston that gave Benitez problems in losing a decision .Same Weston that was giving Hearns a problem until his eye got damaged.
Pete Ranzany was a soild contender . He got blasted out in two rounds.
    Angel Espada- broken jaw.
Clyde Gray went the distance with Napoles. Also first welterweight opponent to see round 10 against Hearns. Lasted TWO rounds with Cuevas.
    Billy Backus- broken eye socket.
You would be hard press to name another boxer that broke MULTIPLE bones on different opponents.
He had that kind of power.

I still believe Cotto has a real shot in this fight. I think Cuevas is a solid opponent and dangerous puncher. I do think Cotto has fought and beat guys as good or better than Cuevas (but might just be my opinion?), however I think Cotto would be the best name on Cuevas’s ledger.

I just believe Cotto is the better more skilled and even more proven guy in this fight. He has everything needed to win except the nostalgia of having fought during the 70-80’s
