I think Mayweather would beat him but how would he do against Pacquiao, Cotto, Margarito, Berto?

    A few things;

In Cuevas' era of one day weigh ins, the likes of Bradley, Alexander and Maidana would almost certainly be fighting at Welter indefinitely. He'd spark all three IMO, and I rate Bradley. Maidana would get massacred!!!

As for the Welters; both Floyd and Manny could be in trouble, and seeing as they are natural Welters the Mexican is not at any size disadvantage. Cuevas was a horrific puncher who broke bones with shots. Floyd would have to fight a really really disciplined fight, which he is capable of. If he chooses to counter shots on his shoulder and counter he could find his defences being quickly smashed to bits. Seriously.

Manny likes to trade way too much. He has shown a very good chin and is very tough, but I'm not certain he takes Cuevas' shots and fires back as quick as he did against Margarito.

A lot of 'Welterweights' are bigger than Cuevas was in his day. However, some of them give him enough chances for him to win anyway.Cotto would capitulate by the end after being horrifically beaten. Cuevas would catch up to him and stop him at some point. Probably spark him.

Margarito would be in for one of the worst stylistic matchups of his career and would get smashed to bits in what would be a very entertaining scrap prime-for-prime (while it lasts)

I actually think Palomino was the better fighter than Cuevas, but would make Manny and Floyd confident picks over Carlos. Against Cuevas, it's dangerous grounds for most and Cuevas would be the hardest puncher either man had faced and without a doubt the best 147lber either took on as well.

Cuevas was not great, but after learning on the job early he hit his rhythm after destroying Espedas. Espedas was a talented boxer and would be one of the better 'belt holders' today (was WBA then IIRC), but was known to coast. Cuevas smashed him to pieces.

But whilst Pipino was never the no.1 Welter and **** himself against Hearns (not surprising) I'd give him a good chance to be seen as a top fighter as P4Per nowadays with the internet and sporadic, carefully chosen fighting schedules of most. He was feared in his day; today he'd be outlawed :hey

Berto would be legally killed inside the first round, as would Ortiz.

    Good post Flea :good

Mayweather would need to be on his toes all night & I think he'd win this comfortably on points but would have a scare or 2 on the way, though if Cuevas caught him flush I doubt he'd survive.

Pacquiao would be a more entertaining fight & I'd favour Pac, but not by a big margin. I'd be surprised if this went 12 rounds & I think that Cuevas would probably go out on his shield but Pac would know he'd been in a fight. The longer the fight went on the stronger Pac would become but early on he would get caught & he would be hurt.

Cotto & Bradley would get bombed out sooner rather than later.

Maidana, Ortiz & Berto wouldnt last 4 rounds.

Margarito would get absolutely pummelled in a terrible match-up for him.

Look how slow his hooks are, surely May and Manny would tee off on him.

Floyd would have to use all his athletic ability to be super negative. It would be understandable here.

Surely Espedas wouldn't have got blown away inside two rounds?

As I say, there was only a definitive period where Cuevas was a top level Welter. He was beaten on points by hot-and-cold ex-amateur star Andy Price (who had been sparked, by tough journeyman Rudy Barro, and would go on to get iced by Leonard inside a round, no great shakes as a pro' but good, beat Palomino as well) and obviously fell off pretty sharply after being K.O'd by Hearns and treated like a punching bag by Duran.

Thing is with Cuevas he only needed to make contact to hurt his man. He was tough, determined and threw with intent. Margarito had Manny wincing from a body shot.

Cuevas really did come out of nowhere. I should've included him in my list of demonic punchers on your other thread Tosh.

It wouldn't be good for Cotto, Margarito and Berto

I'd have to avert my eyes in the later rounds of Cotto/Cuevas (if it got that far)

For the record, whilst I only posted what Cuevas brings to the table against the 'big two' I do think they'd both beat him. They are both faster of hand and feet than Cuevas but would need to put on phenomenal performances not to come out of it with some bad battle scars.

Good fight here against Ranzany, a solid top10 contender.

Cuevas does have some method to his madness.
