Irks me this not happening. Palomino was better technically but Cuevas has that fight changing power. Both seemed like journeymen come good when they succeeded in their title shots. In my mind Palomino wins a split decision because realistically Cuevas just has a punchers chance. It might even be that Palomino counters him and stops him early.
That's precisely the way i worded an appraisal of Cuevas. But can you be said to be a journeyman with that ****ed up power? Additionally, his paper record is kind of destroyed by his late career disaster. So it's probably a bit harsh retrospectively anyway.
Carlos Palomino was as hard as nails.I couldn't see him losing this, no matter how hard Cuevas banged
I'll say Cuevas. I keep thinking of the success had early by the likes of Green and Muniz, though Palomino ground them down. What if it had been Cuevas' power backing up that aggression early on? I mean, the much lighter-hitting Muniz had him down. I'll roll the dice and say Cuevas by stoppage, without an ounce of confidence in the pick.
Cuevas was the more murderous puncher but I see Palomino starting cautiously and outboxing his man. Palomino UD 15.
Cuevas was feared at the time he held the title. As a teenager, I remember it was a huge deal when Randy Shields actually survived all 15 rounds against him. It made the national news in the U.S. It was surprising the two never did fight. The magazines back then were filled with fans writing letters just begging for it. If they had met when both were champs, I think Cuevas knocks out Palomino. Palomino, once he won the title, always seemed to be more interested in getting into Hollywood movies or on TV shows than fighting. Not that he didn't fight. But his eyes were focused on how he could parlay the title into a career in movies.
This would have been a killer fight back when both were at their peaks as champion. They both had those devastating left hooks. Carlos' was more sharp and lights out like when he KO'd Green whereas Pipino's was more of a bludgeoning wrecking ball. Both were great body punchers. Carlos had the better jab and was slicker but Pipino was younger and more savage. It's just so hard to make a pick but this would have been a classic bout for the time. If I had to choose, I'd say Carlos by stoppage by the 10th round but I wouldn't bet a penny on it.
My understanding from people on the scene out west at this time is that cuevas was steared from palamino.
Mickey Ward had incredible power as well. Augustus had incredible reflexes. But yes he clearly wasn't a journeyman. He was a kid who got thrown to the wolves and once he matured, he came good. Not too dissimilar to Margarito really, despite being a lot more well regarded.
