I can't say that Cuevas couldn't catch Carlos just right and get the stoppage. Pipino was powerful. It's just one one of those things I would have to see first. Palomino was tough and good inside.
It's an open fight for sure. Cuevas has that power but Palomino is tough and skilled. You can argue pretty well for either.
It would be a high contact fight. I'm trying to recollect how often Palomino was badly hurt. Duran had him buzzed a couple of times but not that serious.
10 title defenses prove this . or was it 11? Either way I go with Pipino.. He had the unluck to run into a young Thomas Hearns looking for his first title.
based on bone crushing power. literally combine that with a steel chin and sheer aggression and Pipino grinds the "skillful" Palomino into a fine powder Pipino before 10
Harold Weston,Angel Espada,Clyde Gray,Pete Ranzany Cuevas fought and stopped the much better comp then Palamino did. And I can't think of one fighter that Palamino fought that could crack like a Cuevas.
Oh cool, I didn't get the memo that sheer quantity of title defenses irrespective of quality was now the measuring stick for greatness. Thanks for the heads up!
The person I quoted? Seems pretty straightforward. He's claiming Pipino > King on the basis of his eleven title defenses, hence my flippant response.
I honestly don't mean to underrate or disrespect Palomino, and I've only seen a few of his fights, so I'm sincerely looking for more insight into his skill set and career. He seems like a relatively flat-footed guy who didn't really utilize his jab effectively (more of a close-medium range power punch guy) and doesn't really have exceptional defensive skills or reflexes, all attributes that would put him in serious danger against Cuevas. For all the talk of Palomino's superior skills, Benitez treated him to a complete boxing clinic. And for all his toughness, Duran bullied and bossed him pretty easily and convincingly. What am I missing? (I get that Cuevas fared even worse against Duran) He did well enough against guys like Stracey, Green, and a late-career Mando Muniz, but I think a prime Cuevas would be a couple levels up from them.
