Pirog and Golovkin should have agreed to fight, imo

Apparently he declined because the fight would have been lost on the American public, but in my view, they both need to get on with it. They're both on the wrong side of 30 and neither's made much money out of boxing.

Unless their plan is to remain anonymous beltholders and stretch it out against C+/B- level fighters until their mid thirties, they'd better not worry about protecting the "0".

Yeah, ideally there'd be a 4-man tournament, with N'Jikam and someone else US TV happens to be backing, for a shot at Martinez next year, but in the absence of such a boom, they'd better pick the hardest fights they can to drum up some interest at least amongst the hard-core fans.

    Agree or disagree?

I don't even know how serious any proposed fight was in the first place. Golovkin's manager dismissed talk of such a fight for pretty much the exact same reasons in the aftermath of his win over Simon. I agree though that the top middleweights need to start fighting each other and stop waiting around fingers crossed for a shot at Martinez, Sturm, or Chavez.

Wrong side of 30s? Golovkin is 29, Pirog is 31.

Golovkin is waiting for Sturms punk ass to fight him. And Pirog wants a unification with Geale or Martinez. No need for them to fight each other at this point.

    Good thread, I agree.

Pirog gets all this hype about being avoided and being "the" man, but somehow, I have a feeling he don't want none of GGG.

My bad... he's 30 in a few weeks, though.

Unless Sturm is forced to fight Golovkin, he won't fight him, will he? He'd probably prefer to drop the belt than fight him.

Will Pirog get that unification? When?

How many years do you reckon they still have before they start declining?

    FYP.

Pirog and Golovkin have already been in some of the most exciting fights of the last few years, so WTF are you talking about?

The thing is that Golovkin doesn't bring him anything, if he was to beat Golovkin nothing comes out of it except for more high risk, low reward attitude from other top middleweights. Both of these guys require recognition, so I can't blame them for not taking it.

Boring? Pirog is one of the most exciting guys around!! Surely!!

And Golovkin, granted, he picks his shots and takes his time to figure out an opponent, but, by god, once he's got you figured out, it's hammer time straight on the button.

I think their styles would go very well together... would be a hell of a fight and one that would show people what they've been missing in the division.

I agree he should have - not because it would have been the best move for him, but because I'm greedy and want to see it. :D

They're good boxer but they fail to promote themselves efficiently (unlike Chisora for example). Nobody would fight either of them because they're high risk/low reward as nobody has heard their names before. Just boring personalities altogether.

It's a fight that can catapult them to where they should be in the first place. At least pundits would be hyping the winner, and if it's a great, close fight, I think the loser would not lose much at all - certainly, they wouldn't be further away from a big-money fight, would they?

Every opportunity for them to take the spotlight away from the cash-cows of the division should be taken, I think. They need to start promoting themselves, against each other, if they have to, imo.

You can promote yourself easily enough without resorting childish antics like the ones this weekend. Ishida became an overnight success story in Japan because he went into Kirkland's back yard as a huge underdog and starched him.

Guys like Cotto, Trinidad, and Pacquiao didn't need to spit in anyone's face to get recognition, either. They did it the old fashioned way.

If you think the only way a fight can get ratonalized now is vis-a-vis a press conference brawl, it's a sad commentary indeed.
