Pirog vs Martirosyan Lands in Krasnodar, September 24

    By Alexey Sukachev

According to powerful Russian promoter Kirill Pchelnikov, WBO middleweight champion Dmitry Pirog (18-0, 14 KOs) will conduct the second defense of his title against WBO #1 and obligatory challenger Gennady Martirosyan (22-2, 11 KOs) on September 24 in Krasnodar, a short distance from his hometown of Temryuk. It’ll be the first ever title fight between two Russians to be held not only in Russia but also across the globe.

“We have already reached agreement with Team Martirosyan. There are few technical details to work off but I can say that this fight is finally on after a lengthy period of negotiations”, confirmed Pchelnikov to R-Sport Russian media agency. “The contest will be held at Olympus sport auditorium in Krasnodar. We are planning a huge event with six more quality duels between well-know fighters”.

This is good news, Pirogs been very inactive since demolishing Jacobs. He has the potential to be a very good fighter. I dont know much about Gennady Martirosyan only that he was out pointed by Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam. Its just a hunch but I have a feelig Pirog's last bad performance maybe playing heavily on his mind in this one, that could turn out good or bad for him.

I think he was rusty against an underrated contender with a slippery style, but clearly he needs to polish up a bit more. Martirosyan is good, but hardly an elite fighter, so it's definitely a good fight for Pirog; hopefully it will get him some more attention.

There was an interview with Pirog's Russian promoter on the scene a few weeks ago and he indicated that they had received an offer to fight in the States (I'm guessing on ESPN), but that they were unsatisfied with the money. While I understand that Pirog likely would have had to take care of his mandatory situation sooner or later, I don't really think that decision is going to help him much in landing a fight with Martinez or a bigger name opponent.

exactly fighting somewhere in the tundra doesn´t bring him any exposure
he should have fought on ESPN for lesser money as an investment, win some fans then get bigger fights and more money in the future..
Karmazin said Pirog only got $50.000 paid for his last fight in Russia so he wouldn´t even have lost much anyway...

$50 000. That's not much! I remember reading an interview of Pirog and I was glad to see that he wanted big names and big fights only. He sounded like an old-school fighter saying that he didn't care about keeping his 0 as long as he was into big meaningful fights. It doesn't look that way so far and that's ****ed up bc Pirog got some real potential!

Unfortunately, nobody wants to deal with him. He's literally kryptonite to the top guys not because he'd beat all of them (I think he's still to inexperienced), but because he presents some risk and brings absolutely no name value to the table himself.

Professional boxing is still relatively new in Russia, and there's not a whole lot of promotional experience there to get their fighters worldwide exposure. It doesn't help that HBO has blacklisted him for looking good and ruining GBP's plans with Jacobs, and he's probably too old for any of the major US promoters to take the chance on buying him out and establishing him here. Building back up from ESPN level fights after you put on a great performance on HBO is a tough pill to swallow.

So, long story short....Pirog's pretty much screwed unless or until someone else gives him a shot out of generosity. And my guess is Martinez, Sturm, and company aren't in any kind of rush for that.

Him fighting again is a good thing, he needs to get some rounds in. Fighting in Russia isn't going to help him land a big money fight on HBO anytime soon. He needs to fight whomever he can on any station that will put him on here. Even if he has to take small money to fight a time or two on ESPN it could pay off later. For now, its good to see him fighting again.

Are him and Vanes related? I, too, thought it was Vanes (I think he's still fighting at JMW).

I'm glad the hype has finally died down. I don't see pirog being a significant player in the mw division.

Is Pirog going to fight the best at 160 anytime soon?
