What's up ESB, Why is it that when I see people in videos throwing the jab/straight right/ jab combination, on their second jab they end up pivoting their left foot while turning their left knee in? This jab looks very similar to my left hook when I throw it with the palm facing down. I'm very much a newbie, but I thought the jab should be thrown with the power coming from the back foot which is planted, and I was not aware that any pivoting should be taking place.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9GoBY5ubJs[/ame] This is not the exact video I was referring to, but as you can see when he throws the jab, his left knee very much comes inward while he's pivoting. Is this "jab" pretty much a straight left? I've yet to hear anyone refer to an orthodox fighter throwing a straight left.
I the guy is over exagerating the turn on his lead leg when he is going slow. When he turns sideways i notice he speeds up and the knee movement is minimalised. He exagerates just to highlight the movement i think, but he should explain this and do the precise movements slowly, but otherwise he is on the right track. P.S his bottom half does look like hes throwing a hook i must agree, but only when hes going slow motion l
I don't believe he is just exaggerating the movement. I have seen him do this many times, as well as others in different videos.
This content is protected It doesn't look right...he's off balance, that stance is just goofy but if it works for him....
He does look like hes throwing a hook when he goes slow, it looks better when he goes fast. Still pivoting off the jab can give you an extra 4 or so inches on your jab if you let your heel move forward when you pivot, you can add more if you shift more weight onto the lead foot and drift your center of balance forward a bit. My coach just showed me the second one (by itself and not including the pivot) and it feels a little off balance so I think its only really good for getting that jab in and maybe a left hook after, its weird throwing a right handed punch afterwards.
It's sometimes called a chuck. After a straight right, instead of coming back with a left hook, you continue in the motion of a hook, but instead, stick a straight left out in between the guard. Watch Hatton use it effectively against Malignnagi.
