Based on what exactly? It's not like Charlo's power is setting the world on fire at 160. Fine, he couldn't KO Korobov and Derevyanchenko, not that big a deal. But he also wasn't able to KO Brandon Adams and Juan Macias Montiel, which is somewhat troubling. Also, a sign that Charlo, who hasn't seemed t have a great gas tank himself lately will carry his power up to 168. As far as Plant goes, does he have poor conditioning or did the raging Canelo chasing him non stop ripping him to the body have something to do with that?
When you're tired punches hurt 10x more, i don't think Charlo would KO him early. Plant gassed out against Truax who was tagging him in the later rounds, which is why i made the prediction that Canelo would stop him late
No, it was Canelo that gassed him out, clearly. Yes, Plant doesn't have a stunning gas tank late, but thankfully for him, Charlo isn't all that accurate against slick fighters and quite obviously isn't packing Super Canelo power.
Agree with all of that apart from Plant gassing and Canelo chasing and landing to the body, Plant was giving Canelo all he could handle until Canelo put everything into that shot that hurt Plant up till then Canelo didn`t land a lot and his hooks were having no effect.
Great question, great potential fight. Both fighters are skilled, smart, and both have serious mean streaks. I would keep them apart before the bout. I was impressed with Plant once the Canelo fight got underway, not so much how he fought, as it was apparent right away how much stronger Canelo was, and after Canelo let a similar fighter, Billy Joe Saunders, steal a few rounds, there was none of that nonsense with Plant - Canelo hunted him down methodically, had zero fear for Plant's power, and turned it up a notch for the KO. Plant stayed poised, a bit elusive, and seemed like he was about to coast to a decision loss, where I expected him to gripe and be his usual disagreeable self. But Canelo was on a mission and took him out. What did impress me was Plant's demeanor post-fight. 'I wanted to keep fighting,' he said once, and then let that go. He apologized for any offense taken for perceived comments against Canelo's mother, which I found disingenuous on Canelo's part: Canelo himself called Demetrius Andrade a m-----f---er and knows very well how that term is used. But Plant surprised me with his directness and sincerity. You never know how a fighter will react to his first loss. Plant showed some class but he was never in Canelo's league strength-wise. Then we come to Jermall Charlo. The more technically sound of the twins while maintaining frightening power, the more stable emotionally and better at adjusting within the fight, Jermall has the whole package. Because they are twins we really get to see the difference maturity and demeanor make with the same physical attributes, and I think Jermall would stand a chance of beating Canelo. He would be just too strong for Plant. I see a competitive fight, with Plant boxing and moving enough to win a few rounds, but once Jermall sees the punches don't hurt him, he'll find his range for a big left-right combination, 8th round KO, winner gets David Benavidez, about whom I can render an opinion in another discussion. Will Plant-Charlo happen? 50-50. Charlo won't wait around and if Canelo vacates, a Benavidez-Charlo fight may be for a few 168 lb. belts, but with everyone knowing who the real boss is, it will be somewhat of an empty title. The Plant situation reminds me a bit of Mario Barrios - a serious, contender-level fighter who grabbed a belt early, with some intriguing possibilities, but a notch below the top tier. Unless Barrios' next opponent, Keith Thurman, has really slowed down quite a bit, I can only hope Barrios makes a decent showing, because I would never have imagined Barrios in the same ring with Thurman -- but that's also for a different analysis. Anyway, I'd pay PPV prices for Charlo-Plant, not shelling out $74.99 for Thurman-Barrios.
Based on recent form I would say Plant, however I expect that moving up in weight will improve Charlo who has been draining himself for a few years now so it may be closer than expected.
I don`t think Charlo has the power to hurt a top 168 fighter, a few 160 fighters have taken his shots easily.
I favor charlo, not an overwhelming favorite but i think hes better. Better wins more complete fighter better puncher I like plant but not convinced he can beat charlo
