Plant vs Resendiz and Charlo vs Lamanna is everything wrong with American boxing

Plant vs Charlo is already hyped. The slap video is one of the most viral and viewed moments of the last few years and sets up their fight well. Having them both fight subpar opposition does nothing to build it further, just risks one of them looking flat, or slipping on a peel and the fight being dead in the water.

Neither are current champions, so the idea of building to a contender level fight is just a waste of time and energy for both. They should be fighting each other, maybe challenging for a world title and then they can come together again in the future if the fight was worthwhile.

Less than one month ago, we had a full weekend of these kinds of set-up fights, and it was the worst weekend of boxing I can remember. No one, aside from maybe Lopez, came out of that weekend enhanced.

Who would have thought. A waste of a potentially fun rivalry.

    Good call OP.

Promoters cynical attempt at "marinating" a fight and milk extra cash "building it up" backfired.

Charlo’s fight was an embarrassment but I loved every minute of seeing Plant being beat up by Mario Lopez, it turned out to be a fun fight.

I only wish I'd have put money on the upsets. The odds were wild.

How about Charlo was simply too inactive and demanded a tune up first? That's what I think happened. People always blame promoters rather than the fighters.
