I know all we seem to do on here is discuss Hatton, but just wanted to ask a serious question to you all. If Ricky Hatton were to beat Pacquiao, then fight JMM and hopefully beat him, then maybe a retirement fight against one other, would you seriously think that Hatton is an ATG? Just take a look at the names below (hypothetically speaking) and without saying ‘he was shot/over the hill’ please genuinely post your thoughts on his resume, the calibre of his opponents, and where he would honestly stand in the sport of Boxing in the future. I have included the PBF fight as even sharing a ring with him is a massive achievement, and as for the Malignaggi fight (!) the fact is he was the top 2 contender in the division, ahead of the likes of Witter, Bradley and Kotelnik. · Jose Luis Castillo · Kosta Tszyu · Paulie Malignaggi · Floyd Mayweather · Luis Collazo · Manny Pacquiao · Juan Manuel Marquez · Shane Mosley This list seems entirely possible to me, maybe the Mosley fight is extreme. I seriously do not think many other fighters could possess such a strong CV. So please, let me know your thoughts as I am very intrigued.
I'd also add Urango to that list, as he's a two time IBF champion. As it stands now, he's a great 140lb fighter, and will become an all time great LWW fighter if he beats Pacquiao and Marquez. I'll exclude Mosely as I don't think that fight is particularly realistic. People may criticize him for not fighting Cotto (for example) at 140 - but he was willing to take on PBF at WW, and DOES deserve credit for that, especially considering that he has often been accused of ducking fighters. He also deserves credit for answering his critics. Who said he had no chance against Tsyzu (and then claimed Tsyzu was shot, AFTER the fact), who said he didn't want to fight abroad (which he then went and did consistently, nearly getting sued by Frank Warren in the process) and who said he was a one dimensional slugger (changed his trainer, outboxed Maglianaggi comprehensively). He listens to the critics and answers them back - and that has to be respected. If he beat all the fighters in your list, all of the critics who called him a 'stay at home' figher with a poor resume will be proved even more wrong then they already are.
Totally agree, I just did not want the thread to descend into the usual ***** fight. Urango is a quality fighter, and to be fair should be rightly included along with Malignaggi. And yes, wicked oints there mate. I feel a lot of people actually dislike him due to way he operates, i.e. all emphasis on the fans, answering critics, like a siege mentality. The British love it, and rightly so. Whats wrong with a fighter who likes to prove others wrong whilst making the Fans happy? This content is protected
Hatton is an excellent fighter, but I don't think a Pac or JMM win would qualify him as an atg. They are naturally smaller men. Now, if Hatton were to rematch Floyd and knock his ass out, that would definitely change things.
Hatton is a great fighter and fun to watch. I do believe he would need to beat other top shelf fighters (yes plural) after beating pac assuming he can get by him. However, this may be difficult unless he can get some of the big name WW's to come down to him. I do believe if he went back up to WW to fight PBF, the result would be the same. I see mosley on the list...again if he moved up to fight him...not good. Ricky just isnt as good above his fighting weight and there is no shame in that. There are some good JWW's out there for him to fight, but since ricky is at the point in his career where he wants the big $$ fights...who knows
Of course. Big 'ifs' though. I think he'll beat Pacquiao, but he'd get murdered against Shane, and I think JMM would probably outpoint him.
bro, if mayweather is without a doubt an ATG, then ricky will most likely go down as one too.... mayweather rode what he did at 130-135 his entire career, ending it with a mile short of a bang.....so, if ricky does that, he's more than sure gonna be an ATG, i mean, he's already knocking on the door and it seems like he'll get in.....a lot of guys on his resume are way better than mayweathers recent opponents (recent meaning his stay at 140-147).... besides that, you gotta look at attitude too...ricky, though lesser skilled then floyd, always wants to leave it all on the table for his fans...and that's something special, something they dont teach you in the gyms that comes so naturally like that shouldn't get overlooked when you're talking about ATG status.... just my .02 though, i dont wanna turn this into a floyd vs ricky thing.....
Yea i think he would be but in your scenario, he would always be an ATG jr.WW who could not perform against guys who were bigger than him.
- Castillo ; finished him with a devastating body punch , Castillos career was going down but still did the job . - Tsyzu ; Great win and elevated Hatton into the spotlight. Yup Kosta was on the fall but none the less the victory was a pinnacle one. - Malignaggi ; fight for me didnt prove much ..Hatton walked throo his punches and you could see from the fight Paulie was struggling with hand injuries. But hes never been stopped and Hatton outclassed him on the night . - Mayweather ; well Pretty Boys a different class to everyone so no disgrace but superior defence and a brilliant PBM gameplan wore Hatton down . Hattons tactics on the night were very naive too and he knows that hence wanting this rematch . - Collazo ; underated fighter and a close decision but a good victory . - Urango ; good win against a bigger fighter who hurt hatton. Urango gone on and proved his quality since.
I think for him to go down as an ATG, he either..... Needs to move DOWN to 135 and beat guys like JMM Or.... Up to 147 and beat Mosley I don't see him moving down to fight Marquez, though the fight could happen.... whilst Shane would murder him. Up at 147 though, I think he would be a very live dog against Cotto, and I would favour him against Berto.
If he beats Pac he'll go down as a lower level ATG. Near the 100 mark. Listen, Hatton is already considering by many one of the greats at 140. People will always discredit him for not being a good fighter when he moves up in weight but that doesn't mean that he doesn't get respect for his other accomplishments.
I would slot Hatton into a top 10 at 140..... higher on H2H but lower on resume - though that could change. A couple of big wins and he goes above Calzaghe - they are very close already.
