Styles make fights and I'll admit that even though I wanted Taylor to win I though Hopkins gave him all he could handle. The 1st fight could've gone either way, but I gave a slight edge to Taylor in the rematch.
Haters go away- this thread is for Hopkins fans ! It's not Nard's fault that he gets robbed because HBO and the industry wanted the young undefeated guy to win. Bernard outclassed Taylor, much more than Pavlik did. He won easily every round that he didn't give willingly away to preserve energy. Pavlik was lucky not to get knocked out on the second round by a ruined and scared Taylor. Bernard Hopkins from ten years ago knocks Pavlik out within 5 rounds. The only reason Pavlik has a chance is that he is 18 years younger than B-Hop.
Hopkins needs to get away from spoiling and being negative. He needs to fight smart with a steady pace during every round. If he's going to throw 20 punches a round, then he's asking for trouble with the judges. Hold if hurt or when tired, thats the only time it's needed. Hopkins' countering, ring generalship, respectable handspeed, and his accuracy are his main weapons.
Listen, I'm a huge Hopkins fan, but I don't think a rematch is good for B-Hop. Yes, he is better fighter than Calzaghe. But Calzaghe is a great fighter and much closer to his prime. He seemed to adapt well to B-Hop in the late rounds. Every day that passes doesn't help B-Hop's chances. Finish off Pavlik B-Hop and retire with a smile ! One day people will understand your greatness and legacy - the only fighter in history who had such a long career facing top opposition without ever being beat up, stopped or dominated in the boxing ring.
Any way you look at it, the post above carries a lot of weight. I probably should have acknowledged this a long time ago, but I am not a nuthugger of Bhop. I simply respect what he has accomplished and believe that he's a living legend because of it. This is why I agree with so much of what gilad has said here. The bottom line is Hopkins can't win this fight tomorrow night on the scorecards. HBO won't allow it.
If he lands MORE shots than Pavlik, he wins. But can he do that? IMO, he can't. Pavlik is a very busy fighter and connects more often than not. The only way I see Bernard winning this is by KO/TKO, but that's no walk in the park either.
Thanks man, but reading what I wrote, maybe I got a little carried away with "within 5 rounds"... anyway, Pavlik is a warrior and I have a lot of respect for him, he's just not in the same class with Hopkins, and there is no shame in that - so few are. But father time here is big factor. When was the last time the age gap in a big fight between the fighters was 18 years or something in that area ? That's what mainly concerns me, along with Freddie Roach's comments about walking to the wrong corner 4 times. Pavlik's a good fighter, but his skills are nothing for B-Hop. I still think Hopkins will win 7-8 rounds, I just hope that justice will be done for once and B-Hop will get the decision.
Very true but at the same time he really could have had better pay days before and after Trinidad if he wasn't so ****in' stubborn all the time..... He easily coulda had RJJ for many millions after Trinidad but he opted to fight a nobody for peanuts instead...If it wasn't for Oscar giving him his big break financially, he might not be who he is today....
