Best pound for pound means the fighter with the best skill, athleticism and physical equipment in relation to the other fighters in his best weight class and/or regardless of weight class.

It's all pretty muddled and unclear. There's no set definition that everyone goes by. This place would be better with some more variety in its discussion outside of "P4P rankings" and "Fighter A vs Fighter B" hypotheticals. How about some more discussion of the fighters themselves, the fights, the eras and goings-on at the time, things that need clearing up, etc. All this hypothetical talk gets a bit overplayed.

Mcgrain great answer...Does a fighter who was the very class of his division, all around skills, beautiful to watch ala Ray Robinson [welterweight] deserve the best P4P crown ?
Or, should it go to great weight handicap ffighters such as Bob Fitzimmons, Sam Langford, Harry Greb who constantly whipped Hall of Famers, spotting them 15 to 50 pounds ?I believe this question must be answered so we can give a more definitive answer to that constant question..What say you ??..

I say you've hit the nail right on the head, that is the question.

    My pick is Langford.

I take it to mean literaly "best per pound of body weight".

So for example, if Jimmy Wilde was the size of Nicolai Valuev without being subject to the laws of physics, he would literaly decapitate him, therfore he is better pound for pound.

No it should not go to weight-handicapped fighters. (On a sidenote i'm sure if i looked through all of your posts literally 50% of them would have the quote, "Harry Greb...15-50 pounds"

You can call that the bad mother ****er rating or whatever, but not P4P, because P4P already has a definitive meaning. What McGrain explained. Fighter A is superior in comparison to fighters his own size, than fighter B is to fighters his own size.

But maybe being a better p4p fighter, doesnt mean you're actually the better fighter??

Harry Greb didn't need weight classes.

He spent his entire career trying to get a fight with the best heavyweight on the planet "Jack Dempsey" and was denied.

The least he would have done if that fight had taken place would have been to give Dempsey his most credible title challenger. One who had beaten the rest.

No i'm back on track now. Maybe some people have a certain boxing style or type of atheletiscism, which is more effective against larger fighters??

Is that truth? Not denying just asking, i don't know. I'm sure i've read a quote on here in which Harry Greb admits that if he were to fight Dempsey, that Dempsey would stop him?? If so its a strange thing to say about somebody you're begging for a fight with

No doubt, whereas others are just more accustomed to a particular weight class. I don't think there necessarily has to be any disparity in the ranking of said fighters. It all comes down to the fighter's skills/ability and the quality of opposition he proved it against for me.
