Please Explain How anyone can have Calzaghe ahead of Paquiao in the p4p listings???

I was really surprised to see Calzaghe go higher on most p4p lists after his dismall performance against a 43 year old career middleweight. My estimation of him dropped considerably.

 

Calzaghe was fighting a natural LHW. That was the problem. Hopkins punches were much heavier than anything he had faced at SMW, so he had to keep his distance and keep his hand up high. He looked awkward against Hopkins, but Everybody looks awkward against Hopkins, only everybody else tends to Lose. Calzaghe won clearly, ugly though the win may have been.
I thought Marquez beat Pacquiao, and many thought he won the first fight as well. That has to effect one's estimation of Pac's ranking. But again, this ranking stuff is nonsense. Pac's a tremendous fighter. But so's Calzaghe.

 

Did anybody realize that for thelast 5 years, Pac never took an easy fight. Some say that Larios or Solis were gimme but Larios had championship experience while Sols is an undefeated prospect with good boxing skill (although his idiot managers probably ruined him by letting him face a P4P fighter). And those fights were just tune-ups.

That I can not say about Calzaghe because most of his figts were not tune-up caliber even.

 

i'm no supporter of pac or calzaghe but skill for skill calzaghe is just the better boxer,: movement, skill, ring smarts, adapability etc and if you compare skill for skill calzagghe is just a bit better -thats just a fact.

 

cant really argue with that. even though some may think hes a better fighter it just will come down to opposition on judgement day, say 3 years after hes retired, and i think there will always be a questionmark over the middle part of calz career.

love watching him fight though and p4p no 3 aint too bad!

 

But boxing is not just about skill, its about intangibles as a fighter. Pac has aggression & power, something he is clearly ahead of Joe. You dont rate a fighter based on skill, you rate them on their ability to beat other fighters meaning their skills + physical assetts, in this case Pac has beaten better fighters in more devastating fashion this proving he is the better boxer, not the more skilled fighter.

 

Skills for skills even JMM, MAB, EM, Ledwaba & Sasakul all of them beats Pac. But the important thing is Pac actually beat all these skilled fighters. So can't bring skills alone in the P4P arguments. It's also about who you beat and how you beat them.

 

I didn't say I take any result as a W, L, or D. I simply said the end result of this fight was a SD for Pacquiao. A close fight that could go either way came out in Pacquiao's favor. Can't hold that against him. Each fight should be looked at individually.

I do think Pacquiao's speed and power have decreased with weight increase, which is natural. (His power may not have decreased, but the fighters he is facing will be able to naturally take it better.....he certainly doesn't hit as hard as a MW as once was claimed). But not to the extent that I have seen Calzaghe slow down.

 

I'll keep it short and sweet.

Manny Pacquiao defeated over the hill Barrera and Moralesand then, I felt, lost to Marquez twice. I can't have him higher than Joe Calzaghe or even Marquez on that basis.

 

I'd have Calzaghe higher because if Calzaghe fought a 168lb version of Pacman I think he'd beat him.

 

And if Pacquiao fought a 130lb version of Calzaghe?

The arguments that Calzaghe should be above Pac are a bit ridiculous. A better question is should Calzaghe be above Marquez?

 

Pacquiao has fought much stiffer competition. Joes wins over Lacy and Kessler are clear and impressive, but his win over Hopkins, the only P4P'er he ever faced, was sloppy and a toss up IMO. Really the only thing Joe has to lean on is his many title defenses, but if he had fought the same competition in different weight classes, say 160-175, he would have little to brag about. Pacquiao is the definite P4P #2.
