I don't think anyone can argue with that. If you had Cotto or Josh winning the fight it really doesn't matter b/c the fight was incredibly close. Josh was the more accurate and landed the harder more effective punches but Cotto controlled the pace and prevented Josh from mounting any form of consistant offense. I personally had Cotto winning by one round with the KD. But Cotto never gave up and stuck to his game plan. By fighting harder in the last two rounds I think he earned the "W". With that said I think Josh can beat Miguel 9 times out of 10........the way Leonard could beat Roberto 9 times out of time. Styles make fights and Josh was all wrong for Cotto....yet he pulled it out which speaks to the kind of fighter Miguel is.

No.....Cotto nor Josh mounted any kind of offense that was worthy of a 10-8 round aside from the KD at Miguel's hands. The 6th round wasn't very competitive but it wasn't like Cotto did anything that caused extensive damage. The fight was close....that's all there is to it. It could have gone either way.

Actually i am not sure either. But if you are right, there cant be any even rounds. Fighter A wins the round 10-9 but gets KD in the last seconds. That should be and even round though, but how would you score it then?

I've never seen it explained properly by an official.....not even the bafoon unofficial judge on HBO (Harold Lederman)......

I've never seen a 9-9 score on a scorecard however due to a knockdown......

I thought the 1st round was bordering on even between Cotto and Clottey.....so when Cotto scored the knockdown, that punch not only won the round but it gave him an extra point just because he scored the knockdown......
I scored that first round 10-8 Cotto.....had that timed jab only staggered Clottey, it would have been 10-9 on my card.

Had I had Clottey winning the round, I'd have scored it even at 10-10.......

I get what the thewoo is saying, and ideally I dont know why the official rules just dont say to deduct a point for each knockdown to make it easier and non-controversial for judges to score......but these boxing orginizations just love to give wiggle room for judges to do their dishonest deeds........

I have no idea why judges are not instructed to score the round as if knockdowns did'nt occur........and then deduct a point for each knockdown......thats the way it should be.......but instead, I've seen countless number of times a fighter dominated a round, to then have a
10-8 scored against him because of a flash knockdown.

If a fighter is winning a round 10-9 and suffers a knockdown.......common sense would tell you to deduct a point for the knockdown and score it 9-9.......but instead because of the 10 point must system (which is a baloney system in effect to make it easier for a judge to be dishonest) alot of judges score such rounds 10-8 to the fighter that scored the knockdown, even though he may have gotten dominated in the round.

Why boxing does'nt do something to rectify this is testament to their deep rooted corruption.

He landed the cleaner harder blows. Had a higher connect % and landed more punches. Also he was the aggressor for most of the fight.

    Lets see

    1. Clean effective punching

    2. Ring generalship

    3. effective aggression

Clottey had it all in this fight. He should have won.

i had it 114-113 cotto the knockdown being the difference......but it could easily been 114-113 clottey.......but i think cotto took it.....

NO WAY IN HELL was this fight 116-111 cotto, you have to be a judge on dancing with the stars to get a score like that.

I had Cotto winning by a point and I am no nut-hugger. I thought Clottey was visibly hurt quite a few more times than Cotto. Punch-stats don't mean everything in that kind of fight. Rematch!

:huhHe never got hit except once in the first round??? So why are you saying it was a close fight,**** Clottey should have won by a UD then and we wouldn't be talking about a controversy. That's common sense:patsch

If you think its an even round then its 10-10. Don't forget you've never actually scored that round 10-9 because it hadn't finished so its not as if you need to take a point from Fighter A.

Cotto basically fought a tough strong welter with one eye, and showed no signs of quitting, much respect to him for the bravery he showed. I had him winning 114-113 but a rematch must happen

There you gave Cotto round 3 in which Clottey landed more punches and round 11 where they landed the same amount.

All I say is you have to score every close round in favour of Cotto to give him the fight, whereas if you give 1-2 close rounds to Clottey, he wins. 115-112 and 116-111 for Cotto are ridiculous scores. Considering he is the champ and it was in MSG and you give close rounds all to him, Cotto 114-113.

    :think
