Holding is illegal, well it depends honestly, Hopkins and Ruiz and Ward are clear examples of what illegal holding is.....
You can hold if your hurt, no doubt but even then there is a limit to that the main rule is protect yourself at all times, But when you just use the holding game to win a fight in no way should any ref put up with it and its been put up with too many times in the last decade.

Holding shouldn't be excessively tolerated, but a lot of times it's mixed in there with infighting or smothering. Just like pushing or nudging with elbows and whatnot, I think that in the right context this kind of thing isn't horrible. Some fighters fight rough and ugly, and as long as they aren't holding up the action or gaining a big unfair advantage, then it's part of the game.

Bogotazo they do get an advantage that is the point.

Holding, butting, rabit punching, pushing are very much tolerated by refs. It is a bit like rugby teams play on the edge. The big the boxing star the more they push their luck. Hopkins, Holyfield, Ward are all dirty. Wladimir type are less so they cherry pick their vices.

It is to tolerated though. Look at Holyfield against Lewis (the head butts) and then Tyson Holyfield. Tyson was vilified for biting Holyfield ear, yet nothing was done about the head butts. A better ref stopping Holyfields antics may have prevent the mess that followed.

Holyfield vs Tyson is complete different to Ottke vs Reid. Where Ottke schools the ref while pulling every stunt in the book. He even gets Reid warned repeatedly for punching him while he is head butting, holding, punching on the break.

The Ottke vs Reid fight wiped out half the boxing fans in Europe it was such a disgraceful fight you could not take professional boxing serious afterwards.

Hopkins vs Calzaghe, Hopkins should have had point deducts as should Holyfield in numerous fights.

Less tolerent refs would improve the sport.

If holding is not allowed, then at NO point during the history of Queensbury Rules boxing has that rule been enforced consistently. Fact.

In fact, the further back in time you go, the more holding there generally is in fights.

I see holding as a strategy more than any of those other fouls. Rabbit punching, headbutting, low blows, that's different in my opinion than tying up an opponent momentarily. If done in excess then obviously it should be penalized, but it's become a part of the game that fighters have learned how to engage in and have equally shown to be capable of learning how to avoid it. I'm not a fan of it at all, it can certainly get annoying, but it also becomes annoying when a referee like Cortez won't let a fighter work inside because one arm isn't free in a tangled fight.

Depends if Cortez is the ref, just look at the way he reffereed Hatton/Mayweather and Calzaghe/Hopkins, completely differently

Boxing only makes money when fans pay to watch their fights. Fans don't pay to watch the ref stop fights that they want to see. Fact!

but when it occurs in very long time the refs must separate the boxers.

    it defends on the refs
