Just assign the number on a simple 1-10 scale that you feel is most appropriate for how good a win this is for Dempsey. Take under consideration the quality of the beaten fighter, the stages of each in their respective careers, etc. Of course, since a 1 is a scraping of the bottom of the barrel, F-level type of match and 10 is an ATG, Ali over Foreman type match, no one will take you seriously for voting 1, 2, 3, 10...you know. But, I believe in freedom of choice, so I'll put those options up there, anyway. We're nowhere without choices, are we? :verysad

Dempsey gets credit for being past his best. Loses it for hitting Sharkey in the nuts. Gets more for the shown short punch to end it and Sharkey should've been defending himself.

On the 5 star rating 3/5 on the 10 star rating 7/10.

That's the number I was thinking, but, I wanted to see if it seemed fair to everyone else. All recent jokes aside, I would be glad to hear McGrain's opinion on this. As well as Suze, if he's around.

The matchup was of course massive, with the winner to get a shot at Tunney. You had Sharkey, the young lion who had kicked the arse of the overlooked top dog for years in Harry Wills and of course the beloved ex-champ Dempsey looking to regain what was lost. The fight was exciting with Sharkey giving Dempsey a good going over early and Dempsey slowly working his way back into the fight. I would rate it higher than a 7 if the ending wasn't so sour. I'm not just talking about Sharkey getting clipped low and what ensued, but something no one really talks about. What I'm referring to is that I think Sharkey could have gotten up, but tried for a DQ. Now before anyone wants to string me up for talking sacrilege, let me say I am not a lemming. Just because Nat or Damon didn't mention it doesn't mean we don't have opinions of our own. Indeed, I think the Stanley Ketchel knockdown of Johnson was nonsense. I use my baby-blues and Ketchel's punch skidded off the top of his head. Johnson awkwardly was falling anyway. But I digress, I look at Sharkey's body-language and it doesn't add up. If you got nailed hard enough to drop you for a 10 count, you're not going to be making a big scene by clutching the twins, which he was doing. I'm actually a fan of Sharkey's and believe he is underrated (albeit a head case) but in this instance, I think he could have gotten up and believe he was trying for a DQ. And that's what sort of ruins an excellent matchup and fight for me. Still and all, a great scalp for Dempsey.

I mean he DID hit Jack in the sack....but then again Duran hit Buchanan in the sack and I bet people rate that win at least an 8. I'll go 7.5....and round it to an 8 :smoke

I rate that a 9. And Duran had looked superb leading up to that.

 Before I opened this thread I thought a 7, no fair.

Great series again BE. Not sure how you'll manage both "Very good or Great" and "Rate this Victory" series but will follow them like a twitter junkie.

A win is about the manner of victory aswell as. The manner isn't that great, Sharkey was winning, Dempsey turned it around a bit but the unpunished fouls and Sharkey's idiocy gave him the win. Still it's over a very good heavyweight, I don't rate Sharkey as high as some but a skilled primed future champion

    I'd go with 7

I'll go with a 5. Sharkey was a prime, future world champion...a great opponent. The only problem is sharkey kicked the living **** out of Jack Dempsey. Nearly knocked him out in round 1, and won 5 of the first 6 rounds on my card. He was well on his way to a 98-92 type unanimous decision victory. Dempsey knew this, so he hit him blatantly in the balls. After getting knocked down with the left hook to the head, sharkey can be seen clutching his balls while down on the canvas. Why would sharkey be grabbing his balls so blatantly if his head was so "buzzed" from a left hook? The referee should have been suspended for counting Sharkey out, instead of giving him 5 minutes to recover from the low blows.

Too much controversy to rate this victory high, and Dempsey was getting exposed by Sharkey big time.

Tunney- Sharkey should have happened in 1927

Sharkey wasn't so buzzed, he could have got up. But he chose to try to win on a foul. The left hook to the head was a good punch and put him down but it wasn't a devastating KO punch. And nor was any low blow that landed a devastating KO punch. He should have gotten up but he obviously didn't fancy fighting another 8 rounds with Dempsey. It wasn't getting too rough in there for Sharkey.
