Please rate Aaron Pryor's skill level 1-10.

Overall? I dont know, he was a natural and relied a fair bit on that.

For a stache rating, at least an 8.

 

I like the way he boxed. Had some tricks up his sleeve.

That, coupled with his awesome offensive skills, gives him an 8 IMO. His tenacity and chin make him nigh on unbeatable at the weight IMO.

Boxing ability - has the ability to jab and move using lateral movement or step inside and pressure, can lead with the jab or the right and steps into his shots well

Defense - some good head movement and slipping but pretty open to being hit if truth be told, a bit of weakness at times

Footwork - very good getting in and out of ideal range/position, using angles, stepping out of range. Underrated footwork

Shot picking/accuracy - very good and underrated

Combinations - certainly puts plenty together accurately

Bodypunching - a weakness, he could have maybe stopped Arguello quicker with a sustained body beatings

Countering ability - because he applys so much pressure taking the lead we don't see much countering, but he could slip and counter pretty well and it set up allot of his attacks. Very good at sneaking the right hand in

Punching technique - good and fluid, but could be a little sloppy at times, which is common with pressure fighters as they have to throw more. His left hook is severely lacking, if he became a better left hooker it would seriously help him in fights imo

 

Any response should have some other fighters rated as well for comparison.

Stamina was excellent
Speed was very, very good.
Chin was excellent.
Heart was excellent ...

Aaron could have easily stayed at 135 his whole career but no ne would fight him .. He had the best shot of any modern era lightweight I knew to fight on even ground with Duran. That's how great I feel Aaron was at his own best ...

Perhaps you should use the same quote you used in another thread. "Aaron pryor is the only junior welterweight I rate as a great fighter who never fought another great fighter in their prime".

 

7 at best....... Pryor was great at 140, but it was based on willpower and aggression..... Pryor's chin was good too at 140...... But, that's where it all ends....... Pryor was nothing at all at 147 pounds.......

Pryor's technique against Arguello in 1982 and 1983 was very basic boxing.... Jab and circle while looking to leap in with a wild right..... Since A.A. was pretty slow by age 30, Pryor got away with his recklessness......

Pryor was not a gifted boxer........ Still, he is a great at 140.......

boxed ears is bang on: h2h pryor is a demon but take off arguello and he's only got an old ass cervantes on his resume

 

I disagree ... Arguello was still a great fighter when he fought Aaron. He was not nearly as shopworn as the fab four ... he was the best lightweight in the world by far when he challenged Pryor. In addition, Aaron cut through Cervantes like nothing unlike someone else who fought tooth and nail against his Cervantes before winning the title ...

 

1. Arguello was still great.
2. Arguello was moving up into his 4 division at least.
3. The lightweight division was not exactly overflowing with greatness.
4. Benitez fought a substancially better version.

 

Pryor was BAD BAD man. I'd give 'm a 10 and make him even-money against ANY lightweight or Jr. welter that's ever laced 'em up.
