Please rate Aaron Pryor's skill level 1-10.

a 10 though JG? he was sloppy as all hell. i mean, as manny steward said he had tons of natural talent, but skill wise he was pretty bad at times

 

How could he possibly be a 10 with his chin in the air and sloppy defense and balance John?

 

Are we rating him technically now? I thought this was based on efficiency. Pryor had glaring technical flaws, obviously, most notably his footwork. However, that didn't stop him from running through damn near every fighter he ever fought, even technically sound boxer-punchers like Arguello. He was hittable, yes, but when he's snapping right back and resuming his chaos after every bomb landed it's hard to really use it against him. Also, his offense often made up for his lack of defense, as the odd angles he'd used to get off his punches often made for a difficult target, as he was constantly moving. Also, the threat of opening up in those situations became more apparent given the assault coming at you.

I'd like to have seen him tried a bit more sternly before judging him on any kind of rating scale, though.

As far as outright skill, well i think Pryor lacks. His strength was his unorthodox frenetic style, chin, stamina and will power. I thought both his defensive and offensive techniques lacked regardless of success. Ali might be another on a much higher scale. Effective yes, but technicallly and skillfully proficient?

 

absolutely but maybe as johnthomas asked, we have different definitions. pryor's boxing SKILL was not that great, his TALENT and natural gifts were brilliant

 

Are we rating automatons or fighters, JT? Agree with all your points, but when the dust clears, all that matters is whose hand is raised; 'n if he manages to steamroll the other guy, it's that much more impressive.

You didn't misinterpret the thread, JT; I just value other things more.

 

Pryor pushes people in ways they do not want to go...Through speed. power, strength...everything is thrown out the window. You simply have to fight him off of you, and that is a tall order.

he was rhythm fighter. he used rhythm to generate his offense, weaving moving his head. he had underrated skills. yeah he didn't have the best form, he made up with that with his tenacity. aaron pryor the honey badger

 

8-8-8-8 which sure is not a bad composite, by comparison I would give Alex an 8 also and Sugar Ray L and Billy Conn 9's.
