The irony in all of this about Roy Jones is that when in his prime he was bothered by seeing what Gerald Mclellan had become. Jones swore up and down he'd retire to early than to late. Jesus, I cant remember an ATG in recent memory who has gotten laid out the amount of times Roy Jones has. Always respected Jones physical skills, but always rooted against him. I just finished watching this fight on replay and it made me sick to my stomach. This ****ing should not be happening. A boxing legend like Roy Jones getting laid out in that manner is not good for boxing.
What purses did he make during his career. $50 million? $100 million? He must have blown through all that cash, there's no other explanation for the Russian passport thing and boxing so many years beyond his due date.
Jones was never one to seek to land real PPV money fights, he was to cautious with his choice of opposition for that. Really he was just content to make a couple of million here and there against mainly C level opposition on HBO. The only real money making PPV fight he had was against John Ruiz for the heavyweight title, where he was guaranteed 10 million dollars No other fight he had beside Ruiz ever came close to that type of payoff for him. Jones likely made more money outside of boxing in endorsements than he made in fight purses. With the type of lifestyle celebrities like to live, I can see where Jones may be dead broke.
Roy shouldn't even be SPARRING at this point. Any trauma to his head will worsen the damage that had already been done. Forget about boxing, the brain doesn't care about winning, losing, sparring, fighting, etc. all it knows it that it is absorbing blows that cause irreparable damage. He should never take a single punch, and really shouldn't have since 2005.
He lives in nowhere Florida on a farm. You can live down there for $20,000 a year. He has money. He's got a job with HBO, too. Unfortunately, according to the article published last week before the fight, he simply won't quit until "God" tells him to. And God will tell him when the doctors say he has brain damage. But if the doctor's don't tell him that, then he's going to keep fighting. He has a death wish. He's like those guys who ski off cliffs and then try to parachute to safety. They do it until they crash and die. Until then, they keep on doing it.
He already did. :yep "Roy Jones Jr should have retired a while back. He was one of the best fighters pound-for pound and that's what I say about it's not nice to see fighters still fighting when they shouldn't be." ---Joseph William "Super Joe" Calzaghe, CBE
You think Roy Jones would be content on a boxing ****yst's salary? Yeah, anyone who has become accustomed to living a millionaires lifestyle would be perfectly content to sit on a farm and hear the cows mooh and the roosters crow. Be real man! Why do you think Roy Jones recent fights have been on foreign soil???? Only abroad can a fight involving Roy Jones still make a good amount of money. In the US he couldn't draw flies any longer. Like any other fighter, Roy Jones fights for money, he likely made more money in this last fight than he will make in the next 5 years broadcasting on HBO.
