I watched that fight and ever since im a big Rose fan. Like you say he has a great style to watch and his win is amazing over Harada

the most flawless performance i have seen is Locche vs Fuji but this is 2nd

 

Lamotta was holding his own in the middle rounds. The fight isn't that completely one sided throughout so I don't think you can pick that one.

 

With this post in mind, should we be considering Olivares vs Rose as one of the most flawless performances ever?

 

Jones's win over Toney was a shutout over not only the #1 in the division, but also the #2 in the world pound-for-pound.

And Toney was not overhyped or undertalented like Lacy was.

 

I think is was George Parnassus the legendary fight promoter/boxing manager out of the West Coast who commented once when asked who was the most beautiful boxer he had ever seen and he immediately replied by saying Lionel Rose, that is some high praise indeed coming from him considering all the great fighters he saw live in his day.

Had Lionel had a better chin and a little more sting in his punches he would have been damn near unbeatable, on pure boxing ability alone not many folks would have been able to outbox him. I`d have loved to see Walter McGowan take on Lionel at bantam, what an interesting technical battle that would have been.

I think Lionel`s size and strenght advantage would have seen him win but it would have been a very entertaining fight which would have gone the distance I`m sure unless Walters skin tore open yet again. As for Fuji/Locche that was a mighty impressive performance as well, although my #1 would be the 1st McCallum/Kalambay bout.

Sumbu outright dominated Mike in that fight and won all but the last round on my card which I gave to Mike, otherwise he was a step behind every second of the way. I have yet to this day to see a more impressive performance than that one, terrific performance by the African that night.

 

I would say yes, Ruben`s performance was nothing short of dominating in that fight, the way he kept closing the distance so fast between himself and Lionel and then rip into him with both hands to the midsection and then step back out before repeating the same process was brilliant, Lionel just had no answer for it that night.

I know he wasn`t 100% going into the bout as Lionel had a very hard time making the weight, but it wouldn`t have made a difference anyway as Ruben was a man on a mission that night to win the title, there are very few men if any for that matter who I would favour over that version of the man.

 

I mentioned this bout in another thread just now and the first Harada/Kingpetch fight is one of the more impressive performances I have ever seen, Harada absolutely trounced Pone in this fight and beat him up something awful in a totally one-sided bout and he was all of 19 years of age too at the time.

It's probably not a serious contender in this thread, but I love Marvin Hagler's performance against Tony Sibson. Short, sharp, quick, clinical, measured, magnificent. And against a very good, game challenger too. A genius at work.

 

Thanks for that Rose was a brillaint 'pure' boxer so to speak. I love watching him. Very skilled fighter but as you say lacked pop and a better chin

 

I love Ali's performance against Williams,but must take into account Williams was badly faded ,so ,I go for Calzaghe's dominating exhibition against Lacy

 

What about Trinidad Hopkins?

This is a fight in which I watched almost in shock and awe as Hopkins, outfought, outboxed and outmuscled and finally stopped Tito Trinidad.

Truthfully, this is one of 3 fights listed that I caught live.
The others being Calzaghe/Lacy and Mayweather/Gatti.

Considering the caliber of opponent and the element of surprise (as in not knowing the result prior to watching the fight)

I give this one the nod.

 

Which is why i voted for Jones/Toney. Still, i think Calzaghe/Lacy is a defendable candidate for the reasons i gave.

Nice to hear you saw those masterful performances live. If we're not considering quality of opponent, then i'd vote for Mayweather/Gatti. That was ****ing brutal man. His punches were so crisp and sharp.


Hopkins did show a flawless performance against Trinidad, but i think Calzaghe/Lacy and Jones/Toney are a bit more valueable because they were against opponents their own size and the #2 guys in the division. Trinidad may have been, but you can't help but see a blown up welterweight against a very big middleweight.

 

There are so many good ones here but it's hard to beat Calzaghe's forensic demolition of Lacy. Not a better fight could have been fought.
