Golden Boy has 60 fighters under contract. Is a high-profile promoter the Holy Grail or a trap for a fighter?

Do the pluses out-weigh the minuses?

all the promoter have plus and negatives.ie gary shaw can get you on to tv but won't make you into a draw.top rank/warren will guide a fighter right but will milk them instead of putting them into meaningful fights

GBP doesnt know much about matchmaking and will throw in a promising prospect against a dangerous high risk-low reward fighter and end up losing.

Like they did with Pac and Cotto....

    Oh wait a minute.

Cotto fought Pac, Margo, Mosley, Judah, Quintana, Malignaggi, Torres, Abdulaev, Clottey

Pac fought Cotto, Clottey, Oscar, Hatton, Marquez, Barrera, Morales and now Margo.

Margo fought Williams, Clottey, Mosley, Cotto, and now Pac

Clottey fought Judah, Cotto, Margartio, Pacquiao.

    hmm

not trying to be an ass, so correct me if i am wrong, but aren't most of those either in-house fights or mandatories?

again...i could be off, as i don't know who promotes/promoted everyone at the times of the fights

Even if a fight is a mandatory or an in-house fight does not mean that it isn't meaningful.

In short, big promoters can make the fights and make you big money. Small promoters can make you a Paul Williams, a really good fighter that casual boxing fans haven't even heard of.

    you're right

    some great fights are in-house

the point is, there are also great fights to be made outside of TR, some better than those that were made instead

as far as mandatories...they are mandatory...fight or vacate...not much choice there

as to the original TS....hard to get big fights w/o a promoter....even the likes of those who self-promoted (rjj) had to make deals with top promoters to get big title fights

With all due respect thats an incredibly ignorant post. Golden Boy has many talented prospects and instead of milking them, they put them in with tough fighters that equal good meaningful fights. They take losses but Golden boy doesn't drop them because losses can make a fighter. I just don't find "good matchmaking" as a guaranteed win for a prospect.

looking back, the Ortiz-Maidana could have been build up better and both fighters would have made more money if it was made later down the line.
