Ive been looking at the the 1st fight between Mcgirt and Whittaker, i thought it was semi close but Sweet pea definetly won. I always thought that Buddy improved as boxer when moved up in weight. He fought briliant against a prime bigger and stronge Simon Brown. I think Cotto has been underrated recently, But hey he lost to a to Rock chinned Hard hittin Margarito(and still did well) and lost to Manny . IMO theres no shame in that ,............OK hes not a great fighter but he is a very goood one And beat Mosley (as you all now)
I'd definitely favor McGirt but in no way would I write off a Cotto win, if we're talking about the best version of Cotto. Cotto is someone I consider arguably great. I can perfectly understand if you don't see it in him, but I can understand if you do too. He has his moments. Then again, he has ...his other moments. I say McGirt's too durable and mentally tough and talented to lose to Cotto 8 times out of 10 though.
SPENSA! I pressed the wrong one to put up a poll Any ways ive been watching some footage of both of them and i think COtto would have took Mcgirt. Miguel Cottl would have som trouble with the classy boxer MCgirt but his great body punching would eventualy get the best of Buddy, fight would be very close and Cotto woud finish him.. Buddy was a helluva fighter but he woulnt be able to ko COtto IM so sure about this cause ive been watching both these guys for the last couple of hours COTTO TKO 11 wins this Scorcards are pretty equal at time of stoppage
This has been done a few times recently...and its a great match because I think both a pretty evenly matched. Cotto probably is my favorite current fighter but my opinion on this one hasnt really changed. Just think Buddy is the superior technician and defensive fighter...Both are gassers but I reckon Buddy wont wilt as bad with the kind of pressure that Miguel puts on, which is a little methodical and reserved then the pressure that Buddy had issues with. Clottey's skills did trouble (along with other things I know)...Even in more or less dominating I did see some frustration against Urkal and Malignaggi...And I rate Buddy better then all of those guys. Dont see Miguel muscling Buddy as much as he used to against the lighter hitting boxer types he has faced...Also I feel Brown is almost as good as Cotto and you can draw some similarities between them. He had different strengths but overall I think he was just about as good as Miguel. Picking Buddy by about a 8-4 or 7-5 kind of decision.
We'll have to agree to disagree. Could be a very interesting fight. The thing about the body shots is, I've just seen Cotto slack off of them so much in his fights with big time fighters at welterweight. The way he used to punish some guys to the body was something. The looks on their faces when those heavy hands plowed into them. Quintana at welterweight was in some real agony there I think. But after him, I don't remember him doing much of anything to the body with Shane, Clottey, Margarito, Pacquiao...I think when the other guy is able to back him up, he loses interest in the body shots and it used to be one of the most important reasons he stopped people, imo.
Great matchup. I like that description of Cotto as "arguably" great, he has a number of qualities I equate with greatness, but ability-wise, he just doesn't matchup well at the great level. Too chinny at 140, a little undersized and outgunned at 147. These flaws don't really play as major a factor here. Maybe Cotto gets the close nod here by being a little steadier and sturdier, although Buddy's level of comp is absolutely sterling.
I think Buddy couls be hurt , I remember when blown up lightweight(Baltazar) almost kod him, and just numerous fights that ive seen that buddy could be hurt. I think it would come down to Cotto being able tol break down Buddy. Heey rock yey Simon Brown was a helluva a fighter and probably a bigger puncher than cotto(not by Much) but Cotto was a much better boxer than Simon. and would not let himself be out BOXED BY THE SOMEWHAT ONE DIMENSIONAL SIMON BROWN
There's less shame in getting rocked by Tony Baltazar than there is in getting rocked by Ricardo Torres or Chop Chop Corley. If Antonio Averagito could knock Cotto out, Simon Brown would sing his eulogy.
Nothing you say there is false. But Tony Baltazar can bang a little bit too. As can Genaro Leon, who was pretty much a Margarito clone that McGirt faced and had some troubles with late in the fight.
Comon dude let the hanwrap contro go Margarito was more of an energized train than Simon Brown . Brown was a better boxer than Margo but didnt have. But thats a different thread dude You had me deleting some stuff on that matchup witch is pretty even.
I don't want to derail your thread anarci with Brown-Margarito discussion, but I've got to say, the only area I give Margarito an edge over Brown is in the ability to take a shot. Even in terms of workrate and stamina, Brown was pretty special in his prime. As you say, as far as boxing ability goes, Brown was better. I'd say he was maybe a better puncher too.
This is a great match-up bioth very good but no grea fighters. McGirt is the better boxer and I guess that earns him a clear UD.
