exactly. Cotto is no better. He is the same guy, he just fought a more damaged version of Tony but it was exactly the same fight as the first: early dominance, late fading - this time the dominance did enough facial damage for interfering commissions to step in.

A guy who gets 9 pounds fatter a few years down the road with age does not miraculously become a better different, fresher guy.

The wins are about the same - if Cotto is a bit stronger at the weight he is also older. Trainer's only matter to like 10% of fighters at this level - it's somebody to blame when something goes wrong. Roach actually did improve Pac, Steward improved Hearns, and Dundee was a good guy, but otherwise most guys are the same whether they are doing it with one trainer or another.

Making 146 in his fight before without trouble and going down one extra pound tells me that was no big deal for Cotto, like Hopkins making 156, below the catch weight, for Oscar and still schooling him. If Cotto had a history of trouble making weight (like Morales or JCC jr) then it would have made a difference. As it is, Cotto was fresher and basically the same guy.

This will be the case regardless of the fighter Pacquiao and Mayweather are facing. Because of one reason and one reason only, Mayweather is the better boxer.

About the same If mayweather wins a shutout style UD Cotto was clearly struggling at welterweight IMO. We saw how Joshua clottey, who I mean no disrespect too nearly beat him when really he shouldn't have come close. The 144 weight is a small issue but the fashion PAC won in was the reason why I rate the win fairly highly. As for floyd-Cotto floyd gets more credit to going up to a weight that Cotto is most comfortable at in this stage of his career. The weight evens out the age difference and how 'shot' Cotto is.

yeah it's not like Cotto spent his whole career here at light middleweight. He's had a few fights against spurious guys, only ONE of whom was a natural light middle in Yuri - and a non-puncher at that.

Mayorga and Margarito ARE career welters who are old. To be fair though Cotto really is a bigger guy naturally than Floyd ... but almost EVERY welter is a bigger guy naturally than individuals like Pac and Hatton. Clottey, Cotto, and Margarito are actually the size of average men when they aren't making weight, Floyd and Pac are smallish in a room.

While I think Cotto is far less explosive I do think his boxing skills are much better these days. which will be the key to beating mayweather.

People who think Cotto was compromised against Pacquiao are mentally handicapped. It's embarrassing. I'm embarrassed for them.

What we know for sure is that Cotto should not have been fighting at 145lbs. It was simply far too light for him at that stage.
