Poll: Hagler vs Qawi at 175

Hagler was neither down (knockdown vs Roldan was a slip) nor really hurt in more than 60 fights. Most of the time when he was hit it looked like he even didn't notice that, and he fought some of the best punchers in his era.

I think Hagler with his southpaw stance, reach advantage and stamina can outbox Quawi. He had actually quite good defence (when he wanted to, that is) and he is not going to make it a war like against Hearns (and anyway his chin is good enough to take a shot from Quawi from time to time). Not that it would be an easy fight for him by any means.

 

I agree. hagler is a much more accomplished fighter. Hagler had great lateral movement. Qawi had none

 

Qawi would kill Hagler in ten rounds.Marvin has no business being in Dwight's territory( 175 pounds).

 

Marvin had arguably the best chin at middleweight, I don't see him being outmatched at light-heavy. He has great boxing skills too. I think he could outpoint Qawi in a tough fight.

Most great fighters can go up an old division and still be competitive.

 

Qawi slept thru the 'Spinks' fight cuz he was fearful of Spinks' skill and power.................. I know that Qawi blamed a cold / flu for the poor showing in 1983, but that was bull**** to the maxi-pad........ Qawi knew he was in there with a great fighter in his prime..........

Against Hagler of 1983, Qawi would be facing a great but smaller man of a solid 10 to 15 pounds naturally lighter......... Sorry, but Qawi of '83 eats Hagler for lunch at 175 pounds...............

Hagler, had he fought Qawi in '83, would've been forced to come UP in weight............ Qawi was already leaned out at 175.................. Qawi hammers Hagler........... Peace.......

Hagler was great, but fighting Qawi would have given Hagler a taste of his own medicine when he wanted all the legends of the lower weights to come up and fight him like Duran/Hearns/Leonard. Those 3 legends moved up to fight him, and it would have shown Hagler what a difference moving up a division or two does. I think he should have tried Qawi or Spinks, but he didn't.

 

I think a lot of esbers missed out on the fight before that, with Davis

Dwight who had just changed his name, came on strong but went flat the rest of the way. Ferdie even asked Mike seated at ringside "what's wrong with Dwight"

and Ferdie was the one saying it shouldve been stopped early

Ever since that night, after the first round you could see it. Dwight was never same after that

Qwai did not sleep through the Spinks fight. He got defeated by a terrific Spinks who fought the best fight of his light heavyweight career. Spinks height, reach, speed, power and over all skills made him too tough n opponent ...

Hagler was not a small middleweight. He was 5'9", 158 - 160 ripped with a long reach and wide shoulders. He was very strong , had murderous power and an all time great chin ...

I think this is a very competitive fight. No knockout here. Qwai was stronger. Hagler would be faster. It would be close but I like Qwai by a decision ...

 

I really don't see the whole 'Qawi was dissuaded by Spinks early thing', Spinks just put on a really good performance and used his height/awkwardness to keep Qawi from being too effective, doubling, tripling and quadrupling the left hand at times at not letting Qawi build any rhythm.

Qawi's still in it, just that Spinks is winning most of the rounds. Spinks was awesome that night, no shame in that.

Also, Hagler is not Spinks in all his pomp at light heavy. Not a good indication of how Qawi vs Hagler would go IMO

 

One of Hagler's advantages was how solid he was at 160. He was a big enough middleweight. Not many guys were strong for Hagler at 160, he was that solid and he could handle it all. Qawi would have been different for Marvin and Marvin would have had to use skills which smaller guys had to use against him. It would have been a totally different fight plan for him, but his southpaw style and speed and counterpunching might have made it interesting. Qawi was strong and that is what makes this fight very interesting. How would Marvin deal with the strength and power. The way Marvin was built, it is very possible Marvin could come in a solid 175 and look big and buff and strong at 175. I doubt it, but stranger things have happened.

 

I think this is an extravagant adjective to use here ,good but not earth shattering imo.

Hagler was a decent puncher. His ending record is 62-3-2 (52) knockouts. Hearns is 61-5-1 (48). Hearns knockout percentage went down when he moved up. which I am sure Hagler's would have also had he moved up, but he was a puncher. 52 knockouts in 62 wins is a good knockout percentage.

 

Yes he was a puncher ,but NOT a puncher with murderous power,he seldom scored one punch kos,and I would say non champs like,

Had better one shot power,I put Hagler with Briscoe and Giardello for power, but not with Jackson,Benn,McCllellan,Ketchel ,Graziano,Hostak,Steele,Valdez.They fit the adjective more aptly imo.

Check out how many of Haglers stoppages were tko's against clean ko's

 

I agree with you there, although I was surprised when he stopped Obelmejias with one punch and also the second Hamsho fight he hurt Hamsho quickly. But yeah most of his knockouts were wearing the guys out, but his power was decent and dependable.
