Tito on the De La Hoya victory alone.

The knock agaisnt Calzaghe is that did not beat his contemporaries whiles they were at their best.

This is not to say that I do not respect Calzaghe as a great- I do. And the "0" is meaningful. But much like Muhammed ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leanoard, or Salvador Sanchez, Tito stepped in the ring agaisnt an arch rival in his prime and stuck him.

I believe a majority of observers feel that Delahoya beat Trinidad, from around 7-5 to 9-3.

Tito's biggest fights have important anomalies in them, DLH (most say he clearly lost) and Vargas (intentional low blows saved him).

I know the experts who really know their careers, both of them, can answer better than I, I just wanted to point that out.

Not that Joe's fights don't have anomalies, however, I felt BHop effectively quit against Joe when he faked the low blow and got the long break, and took it! For a fake low blow when he was gassed.

My first thought would be Calzaghe ranks higher but then you have to look at the competition level too for sure.

calzaghe is more skilled but he is damn sure not higher on atg list. Joe is too much of a cherry picker and non risk taking.

And they have every right to their oppinion. Fact is- at least Tito was in the ring with Oscar so they could form it.

yeah you might be right, but it is hard to really compare. Calzaghe would have probably beaten Blocker and Campas and Carr. Would he have beaten a Delahoya quality? Probably since it was a disputed decision. Calzaghe could have moved up and beaten a Joppy quality and he didn't have the power of Tito, but he was better than Vargas and Reid.

I don't see how you can rate Calzaghe higher than Tito at all. The zero would have been more meaningful if he had actually fought for better sanctioning body that enforces mandatories (the WBO mandatories were extremely weak during the Calzaghe reign and were not consistently enforced. He fought Pudwell types during his defenses.

During the early part of his reign, I rated Ottke higher based on achievement (Ottke had skills, not a popular opinion) and opposition. The Lacy victory is good, but is on par with the David Reid victory by Trinidad imo. Trinidad is a three weight champion, was perennial P4P and fought strong / great opposition.

I do not think Hopkins can be compared, Hopkins signature fight was against Trinidad when he was considered (virtually) unbeatable and undefeated. And I have never been a Calzaghe hater, I would for instance favour him over Ottke but they did not fight, and defended him when he was still largely unknown in the US (like Lacy fight).

Calzaghe's career is being overrated, his "0" and # of title defenses are meaningfull but not as meaningful as his fans may like because his opposition was not that great. His best fights prior Lacy were Reid (close), Mitchell (after Ottke) and Brewer (old version, after Ottke). Calzaghe is an all-time great though, albeit lower echelon.
