This has been done so many times. Hagler 144-140 The judges had it closer than reality They also had Hearns-Benitez and Benitez-Duran closer than reality, but nobody does a thread about those.
We've had polls on this before? I know that it's been discussed but I just wanted to get a head count. This issue came up recently in another thread, when someone mentioned that he scored the fight for Duran.
I had it close but for Hagler. Dont know how you can get to a Duran win on the cards. Hagler gave Duran WAY too much respect. Kind of a curious fight for me.
I had it either 9-5-1 or 10-4-1 Hagler. I have it written down somewhere. Duran fought well but no way should he have been ahead after 13 rounds
3 or 4 rounds. Hagler should have won more convincingly. He gave a much smaller Duran too much respect.
It was kind of like a sparring session. Both guys sat back and tried to counter, and then Hagler used his size to win the last many rounds and won a comfortable decision.
Yeah, Duran really was got some generous scorecards against Benitez and Hagler. The fights were not that close.
Here's a couple of quotes from boxrec. Duran could be a very sore and classless loser. Hagler: "It seemed everybody was disappointed that I didn't knock him out. I felt that way myself. But he wasn't that vulnerable to a knockout. It was hard to hit him with a solid punch....You don't barrel in there on a guy like Roberto Duran. Why take unnecessary punishment unless you have to? I'd been effective and was winning the fight, so it isn't like I had to go in there and take the punishment to bomb him out." Duran: "He came to tear my head off, but when he saw that I could hit him hard, with strength, he got scared and became a coward. That's why he didn't take too many chances and mix it up with me. Everyone was saying he was a destroyer, but when he hit me, he didn't do anything to me. His punches absolutely did me no damage. He got scared every time he threw a jab because I could get my right in under it. That's why he held off so much."
I think Marvin won cleanly and was never in try of anything but a but of self doubt that hit him against Vito the first time, a brief moment in the Obel rematch when he almost punched himself out , here against Duran and of course against Leonard ..
A long time since I watched it but I had it about 11-4 Hagler. I think in some peoples' eyes, because Duran was doing better than expected, this may have influenced the way some individuals scored the fight.
