You guys nailed it ... his prime was Quarry 1 to Ali 1 ... I love the Ellis performance as Jimmy was a terrific fighter in his own right and almost forgotten today ...

In the second fight with Bonevena, he looked incredible...
RagingB(_)ll (where I got hold of it) had told me that Frazier was in peak form in this fight...and after viewing it...There is no question for me.

I tend to place fighters in their 3 bout prime. Therefore Frazier's prime would be the Ellis-Foster-Ali bouts.

There are some very good responses on this thread, and I appreciate ALL of them. However the question that I initially asked was: In which FIGHT did you feel Frazier was at his optimal peak?

There are a lot of answers that involve a general range or string of matches, which is fine, but I'd like to see more posters settle on a single occasion.

I don't think he'd be competitive with Foreman and perhaps a few others.

    Agreed,

I think Foreman was a fighter who would have had Frazier's number, regardless of what year it was.

Magoo, Chris, what do you make of Frazier-Foreman II?

Who would you say was further past prime at the time of that fight?

Without a doubt, the FOTC in '71! Even more so than the Chuvalo or the Foster fights. Frazier was at his very best the 1st time against Ali.

I still say Frazier. Sure, its possible that Foreman may have still been a bit jaded by the Ali and Lyle fights, and perhaps Joe knew better than to just walk right into Foreman's punches. But, I think Joe was clearly at the end of his rope by then. We also have to take into account, that there was no title or anything significant on the line here.

I agree that Foreman was bad news stylistically for Frazier. I do however think that a prime Frazier with the right referee (who wouldn't allow all of Foreman's pushing) could give Foreman more of a battle.

I think Frazier in the second fight had a decent gameplan but didn't have the tools left to pull it off.

Yup. Peak Frazier is competitive with peak Foreman IMO. I think Foreman would indeed catch him eventually, but I don't think this fight would be in any way one sided. Not at all.

Assuming of course that he approached the fight with a sound plan of action. Remember, a peak Frazier knew nothing about Foreman, and fought him accordingly which resulted in disaster. That said, I think a prime Joe combined with the right fight plan, could have possible gone 6 or 7 rounds and even landed some decent shots. But, at the end of the day, he still ends up on the losing side of the field....

well i think joe would always be beat by foreman who is underestimated in the clever stakes

foreman was a clever fighter who knew where to throw his punches i think he would KO frazier around the 6th if they fought in joes prime
