He "definitely" was NOT the best heavyweight in the early to mid nineties.Fact.

I guess it's a matter of opinion. In my book, even the 1992 version of Lewis was better than any of his competitors at the time. Ditto for the 1993-1996 version of Lewis against Bowe, Holyfield and Tyson during that period. The only thing that changed about Lewis after 1996 is that he became even better.

Working off his jab (IMO his jab itself wasn't the strongest point in his game)Lewis was the most complete fighter ,from a combined physically and technical viewpoint, the heavyweight division has ever seen.

I do have doubts about how well he would have done H2H ,against some other greats in their prime though.

One of the most under-rated aspects of Lewis's abilities was he ability to control the range of where a fight was fought. A great example of this is the Tua fight.

I didnt think Lennox was that good as champ whilst he was fighting and used to critisise him a lot.Looking back over his career though ive realised i was wrong. He did have some good fights and beat some decent fighters.A few of the guys Lennox beat years ago are still getting title fights today.Yes he beat a shot Tyson and a past it Holyfield but he beat Tua,Grant,Briggs, mavrovic and Golata to name a few who were not shot or past it.
Sometimes it did seem he could have done more and been a little more interesting to watch. But he got the job done and was a dominant champ. The level of opposition in some of his fights is not the fault of Lennox. Its a shame he never fought Bowe though.
