Guys my take his that Pollack has done and continues to do a monumental job in producing this extensive body of work .. it is extremely time consuming and not very rewarding from a financial standpoint .. my guess is after Hart and Burns he didn't feel he had it in him to commit the time on Willard ... out of all the people that claim to be writing a book he's put out ten ... a heck of an accomplishment ..
I picked up a copy of it at a bookstore in Iowa when I was there. The amount of research that goes into something like that boggles the mind.
One question I wonder if apollack will address [in his 2nd Dempsey book]: "Regarding the rules in force, does a determination whether Dempsey, against Firpo, was either punched out of the ring, or pushed out of the ring, determine, or give legitimate referee latitude, as to whether Dempsey was obliged to return to the ring in a given span of time?" [I say this because, on film, Firpo seems to land a punch, then suffix it with a push; it's not at all clear that Dempsey was actually 'punched' out of the ring. (I'm tempted to say it rather seems that he was not)]. [EDIT: Also wondering if there was much post-fight discussion about whether it mattered whether Dempsey was punched or pushed/shoved out of the ring].
