Just found the thought of this interesting, since world class fighters barley make it to the 50 win mark nowadays, let alone 100.

    Simple poll.

It's doubtful. Olivares didn't make it, and he's got a record few could equal.

He's coming up to 16 years of pro boxing, with 76 wins (77 if he beats Chokchai), which gives you an average of 4.75 (or 4.81) per year. He'd need another five years (more than four, anyway) at the same win rate to get there, and bear in mind that people's success drops off as they get nearer retirement, plus they tend to fight less often, plus they tend to fight better opposition if they're at the top of the tree like Pong is, which might pull the rate down even more.

It'd be good if he did, but I don't think he should kill himself trying.

That's what impresses me with Pong. He's been world level for awhile, and still fights AT LEAST 3-4 times a year.

90% Of fighters nowadays only fight 2 times a year once they get a world title for the most part.

I think Pong will get to the 100 mark. Because once if he loses his world title before then (which I'm sure he will) , he will probably realize he's slipping and just beat a bunch of local nobodies for awhile till retirement.

Talking of which, does anyone have a definite date on the Chokchai fight?

Boxrec, Fightnews and the BBC are saying its Oct 8th.
The Ring thinks it's this weekend.

I know it's been moved around a bit, so I'm not sure which of these is more up-to-date.

Half his opponents for any given year are absolute cans though...anywhere else and he wouldnt be allowed to fight that level of fighter..And he probably wouldnt have has many fights under his belt.

That's true, but if you check the records of old-school legends, they're exactly the same way. Quite a few high-calibre fights, but they fought so many that there are more than a handful of cans in there, too.

I think Thai pro boxing matches (especially its most popular, ageing fighters) become somewhat like a regular stage show for the fans.

Match up a southeast asian tomato can against the living legend, and advertise the fight.

"Come and See the Living Legend ________ fight this weekend!"

He wins an honest fight, (not a fix) against a weak opponent maybe by KO, and the fans go home happy and satisfied that they saw their favourite fighter in action once again.

They wouldnt care about the opponent's record, they're just happy to see their idol fight again.

I think Chatchai Sasakul and a few other Thai boxers have been doing this now, in their later career.

If dangerous guys like Victor Ortiz can fight guys like Hector Allator (16-8) why shouldnt Pong be allowed to fight bums?
