Having thought it through, i would struggle to put Pong in the top 20 if i was seeking a balanced view.I find it hard to see how that could be justified considering he fought what basically amounts to Euro title level(in a weak division\era euro-wise)opposition for most defences. After that i can see him being placed anywhere in a top 50 depending on how you rate him as a fighter. Nobody puts Ottke in the top 15 light-heavies or Eubank there.Pong shouldn't be either and i know 175 is deeper than Fly, but not to the extent a guy who fought as a champ in the worst era for the division against mostly no-hopers should be getting into the top 15 ahead of loads of genuine talents that campaigned in far stronger periods, held titles and scored top-notch wins. Maybe if Pong had looked a masterful ring mechanic or special physical force, he could get special treatment, but he more had the look of a good, solid tidy technician to me.Not a special or really elite one. A fine fighter, all said, but i think for very recent modern champs in the lower-weights, Sahaprom has the best argument for edging into a top 20.I'd probably leave him out myself, but there was a gifted, natural looking boxer-puncher....way more talented looking than most of his contemporaries when he was at his best. Not so much Pong.
This I agree with. In fact, Veraphol might well be the greatest Thai IMO. If you punish Bus Station for his short prime and Pone for his generally shoddy output and poor performances.
Pong's rankings mean very little in the grand scheme of things. One of the most important questions we should all be asking ourselves is Who's greater: Leopard Tamakuma, Battlehawk Kazama or Puma Toguchi?
I assume this bump is from my little trawl through old threads, I'm basically looking at what I can for a top 10 Thai fighters. Have you done one by any chance?
No I don't think I have. But Gingpet, Veeraphon, Chionoi, Borkorsor, Saensak, Wonjongkam, Srisaket, Khaosai, Khaokor, Samart would probably be the ten fighters that would feature off the top of my head.
