Hey - has anyone seen much of this guy? Was just browsing through Boxrec and see he comfortably (going by the scores) beat Zewski, who I actually thought looked pretty decent. Unbeaten in 28 so looking like he could become a contender eventually. We don't get much exposure to fighters like this in the UK so just wondered what the opinion was? Thanks!
Konstantin Ponomarev is a 5'9.5 22 year old Welterweight with a 28-0 13 KO's record. Born in and fighting out of Miass, Russia. With his boyish good looks this skilled young man has what it takes to be a breakout star, he has a fascinating style reminiscent of Sergio Martinez only he holds his hands up more frequently, he has very smooth footwork, and fast hands, and a very awkward style. He's been signed by Top Rank and has already been a sparring partner for Provodnikov and now Pacquiao is preparation for his match against Chris Algieri. Already at the tender age of 22 he has 25 victories most of them shut outs and most impressive coming against veteran Cosme Rivera, in a match where he completely confounded the old veteran who had no answers for Konstantin. While he doesn't have a lot of KO's he doesn't seem to need them he makes up for it with his skills. He is a quality welterweight prospect, for sure. He isn't stylistically similar to a number of the top guys from Eastern Europe, but he can box. He should be getting a good opponent soon. I was hoping it was Berto, but someone took him off the plate.
I've seen 3-4 fights, at first I was not really all that impressed, especially after that performance against the Canadian dude (forgot his name now) but he did well against Zewski, I was actaully really excited about Zewski as a prospect and he derailed it.
