from worcester,England. record 13 wins, 142 loses,5 draws. out of his wins only 1 by ko,but must have good chin as in his 142 loses he has been ko`d 19 times. i think they use him to knotch up your wins. kell brook has fought him 3 times and for what other than to just get more wins on your record. even nathan cleverly has fought him??????? so lets all have a drink tonight for the punch bag ERNIE SMITH:cheers
Ernie is no punchbag. He took heavy handed Brook the distance three times without the slightest trouble and shouted "Anyone got a step ladder?" when he got into the ring to face tall Cleverly. He's a character, a nice guy and a great, great pro, along with his twin brother Billy.
not disrespecting the man,he sets people on ther way, thats why i say raise your glass to him when you have your first pint tonight.
Tough tough ****ers Ernie and Billy Smith, theyre not in this to win popularity contests, they just want to fight and earn a living. Maybe with more of a backing at the start of their career they would have padded records and would've won titles. Remember in boxing the difference between domestic champions and "journeymen" a lot of the time isn't talent, its whether you can flog a few tickets or have a big promoter backing you. Doubt anyone who's shared a ring with Ernie will tell you it was an easy job. As boxing fans we have to have the most respect for these guys, they often save small hall shows and give the "next big thing" a much needed wake up call. On a sad not sure I heard recently that one of the two, Ernie or Billy had failed a medical scan and had their licence suspended, not 100% sure though. EDIT - Just had a look on Boxrec looks like its Ernie who's had his licence suspended, as he hasn't fought since July, looks like Billy knocked it on the head last year. If these 2 are now out of the ring we should definitely raise a glass to them.
To be honest I've seen both a fair few times, and some of the times thought they won the bout, but they dont seem to mind as long as the they get paid? Tough wee ****ers
Billy is the better of the two but trust me, a lot of these journeyman are better then there unbeaten counterparts. They just don't sell tickets.,
A proper Joruneyman. Someone who takes a shot and roughs up and shows the prospect he's fighting some tricks of the trade...not like the eurobums who dive to the floor after one shot. Without these people shows and promotions would go under. Bless these guys....without them...our sport wouldn't be the same.
I announced one of Ernie's fights once and he was a fantasic bloke. I heard him getting his medical - Doctor - "when was your last bout Ernie?" Ernie "Last night" Doctor "Ernie come on" Ernie "Oh I dunno, last week probably" I've also heard rumours that before a fight he can either be found outside chain smoking or in a pub!!
