HOW POPULAR do u believe boxing would be today if it only had 1 branch instead of 4 and if it therefore had 1 heavyweight champ,1 middleweight champ, and so on.Also if there was only 8 divisions such as used to be instead of what 17? Than also u wouldnt have everybody saying langford or dempsey or rocky and so on were to small to beat the heavys of today.i just brought up a poll that said only 1% of men who follow more than 1 sport had boxing as number 1 in 2006 if they did that in the 50,s or any era before all this ridiculas promotional schemes abeit it was much higher i often daydream of the world getting back to 1 champ per div even if there is still more than a dozen weight div.It depresses me to see boxing slipping away slowly i like mma but a newer sport such as this is already more poular, and for peeks sake even golf or driving a car seems to be more popular, just to mention i dont even think golf or bowling or so on should be considerd a sport
Wow, not yes, but hell yes! Can anybody, and I know as I ask this I'm leading with my face, but can anybody, even amongst the well-informed, illustrious, bordering-on-obsessed fight fans in the Classic Forum even name every current champion without doing a quick search of it? In this lofty arena it may not be such an issue, 'cause true fight fans, and I am still blown away, humbled, by the breadth of knowledge I encounter on this forum, but for the casual even to the devotee of the sweet science, it is a maze. The fight fan without a habit to feed, who likes the game, remembers fondly the glory days of the past, who even has some understanding of the techniques involved, how to snap the jab and plant on the hook etc., but does not have the time or the inclination to keep up with fight results and rankings and so many belts if you laid them end to end they'd extend deep into the heart of Mainland China, it is frustrating, and can be a permanent turn off, like the ninth grade algebra student who doesn't get an immediate grasp of the subject matter that builds on top of itself layer by layer, they can turn away, and who's better off? Boxing as a game? No, only the people who earn big money by billing a fight as yet another title bout.
Simply, yes. The single champions would be far more revered, idolized and distinguished thus more marketable. Fights would take much less time to set up - in both champion bouts and contender assortment for no. 1 contention 'cause they're all marching in one direction. Not many care for multiple titles, they mean little - if there was one champion it would have a knock on effect and fans would take more care in noting who is in line for the belt.
