One of the biggest fights in the new welterweight era and one of the most anticipated fights.

Thurman is simply the better boxer.

    Workrate:

Thurman vs Guerrero - Thurman threw 598 punches and landed 211.
Thurman vs Jan Zaveck - Thurman threw 817 punches and landed 217.

Porter vs Broner - Porter threw 590 punches and landed 149.
Porter vs Alexander - Porter threw 642 punches and landed 184.

    Defence:

    Thurman vs Guerrero - Guerrero landed 104 of 497 punches - 21%
    Thurman vs Zaveck - Zaveck landed 110 of 397 punches - 28%

    Porter vs Broner - Broner landed 88 of 309 punches - 28%
    Porter vs Alexander - Devon landed 169 of 628 punches - 27%

Pretty even stats against opponents on the same level - the biggest difference is the fact that Thurman won 120-108, 120-108, 120-108 over Zaveck and 120-107, 118-109, 118-108 over Guerrero. On the other side Porter only won 114-112, 118-108, 115-111 over Broner and 115-113, 116-112, 116-112 in a close fight vs Devon Alexander.

Thurman is a clever fighter with good and fast movement. He have a better KO% than Porter and he is 26-0 with 22 KOs and 4 wide decision wins. Porter with 26-1-1 with 16 KOs. 1 draw vs Julio Diaz which he defeated a year later by a easy decision. Thurman then defeated Diaz by a early KO in the third round. He lost against Kell Brook who haven't fought any a level boxer since or before and he had a close decision win over Devon Alexander.

Thurman is also a good brawler. In the fight vs Diego Chaves he turned the fight around and dominated from round 3-4 until he got the knockout win in the 10th round. Diego Chaves is still his best win so far, and he is far better than everyone on Porter's recordlist - maybe as good as Brook. I also rate Guerrero as a better win than Broner - like i rate Zaveck just as good as Devon at that time.

Either this will be a decision win for Thurman or a KO. I don't see Porter winning this fight.

Porter is physically stronger than Thurman, and Thurman isn't stronger than Broner and Brook, that spells doom for One Time.:deal

Taking a much closer look at it, I would have to agree with OP.

    Punching power
    Punching accuracy
    Handspeed
    Footwork
    Height
    Reach
    Chin
    Defensive prowess
    Effective aggression
    Overall boxing ability

Porter has the better chin. Reach is about even.

Thurman has him beat everywhere else, with several being by wide margins.

I don't see many advantages for Run Time.

I only disagree with the effective agression part CST. Porter smothers a lot of his punches, and is less accurate as Uma.

Well he's got the aggressive part down pat, and even though he smothers much of what he does, his all out aggression still usually discombobulates his opponents and overwhelms them so much. that his largely ineffective aggression is somehow effective in ways that it shouldn't be.... if that makes any sense at all.

What makes me doubt Thurman is that the one time he was put under pressure by a decent brawler, Chaves, he wasn't looking so hot.
He did adjusted well, but Porter is superior to, and far more relentless than Chaves.
Keith seems like a kinda thoughtful guy, I think he'll struggle when forced to fight purely on instinct.

I get what you mean, basically it's called "ineffective agression" in boxing terms but it's effective non the less. :yep

the stats given. could it be because the 2 fighters porter has faced are better than the 2 thurman faced? or their fighting styles were different?

i give them both as much chance.
thurman needs to keep on the outside
porter needs to get on the inside and beat him up.

Yeah I agree. Just simply a more calculated, better all around fighter with more power.

Porter has fought the better competition hands down.

people go nuts about thurman beating Julio diaz.
