Cuba has produced its share of world class professional boxers. However since Fidel Castro took over that resource has not been as abundant. Castro came into power in 1959. What is your post 1959 Cuba P4P? Myattempt. 1. Jose Napoles. Napoles may be the best ever out of Cuba. I think it is him or Kid Gavilan who retired in 1958. 2. Joel Casamayor. So far the best of the recent escapees. Super Featherweight and lighweight champion. Very impressive resume as well. 3. Juan Carlos Gomez. Too high? Gomez had a great run at cruiserweigh holding the WBC championship from 1998-2001. Defending 10 times with 9 stoppages. He may be the second best 190 lbs cruiserweight behind Evander Holyfield. 4. Luis Rodriguez. I have to admit I don't know a whole lot about him. He dose seem to get lot of praise hear. 5. Yuriorkis Gamboa. If we are talking about potential. Than Gamboa along with the escapees who came with him and or the same time may surpass everyone 1-4 on this list. He's he furthest a head of his class, and is starting to but together a strong resume. I think I'm going to stop at 5. I'm not comfortable ranking Sugar Ramos and Benny Paret. I think they were very good but not at the same level as the above. I think boxers like , Odlanier Solis, Erislandy Lara. Mike Perez and Guillermo Rigondeaux have a lot of potential but are not there yet.
Luis Rodriguez was like a lesser version of Joel Casamayor. A little slower of hand and foot and not as defensively sound.
