The thing is, I'm more of a boxing fan than an MMA fan. I'll take a great boxing match over a great MMA match.

But boxing is rotten. It has a rich history that MMA can't ever hope to match, but these days there's nothing to get excited about. You can't really follow it. Nobody fights each other. You don't get excited about more than a handful of fighters. And you can't even hope to keep track of the belts.

UFC is the complete opposite of that. Heaps going on. Really easy to follow. Incredibly accessible. Quite possible to develop favourite lower-to-mid-card fighters and follow their careers. Top contenders fight each other on every card. And there is one guy who is The Man To Beat in each division, fighting a top 2 contender every time out.

I've introduced two friends to UFC by showing them the odd card here and there. They now follow the sport and watch the fights independantly. Try doing that with boxing.

It's better organized and better marketed, but you could also say that business as usual in the UFC produces few stars, and I think on a global scale it will never have the edge. Only Brazil likely favors MMA in Latin America, and Europe seems to still heavily favor boxing; Eastern Europe has seen a warming up to MMA considerably but I still think they produce more quality boxers and follow it more.

The biggest networks might mention MMA more on a superficial level, but I feel that at the end of the day, the most exciting boxing matches and the biggest match-ups get the most attention from a broader range of mainstream news sources. Will we ever see Silva or Fedor on 60 minutes? Will UFC's still have so many PPV buys in ten years after already seeing a somewhat gradual decline? Will the amount of celebrities interested in and attending super-fights in MMA ever compare to those engaged in following boxing? I don't think so. At least on my facebook feed, mere acquaintances are much more likely to post and respond to news and controversy in boxing far more than MMA.

I believe MMA is marketed in such a way that it's accessible and new and more likely to be mentioned when referencing hardcore athletic violence in subtle cues, but that it will never go too far beyond what it is now and is already declining.

The rest of your post is quite reasonable, but this is flat wrong. The Fox deal alone guarantees that the sport is going to explode in terms of mainstream visibility.

Def aint replacing boxing in the UK or Europe.

MMA is bigger in Brazil than boxing, probably the same in Japan.

The fight industry as a whole in Japan is dead. Also you have to realise that in Japan MMA, Pro-wrestling, Kickboxing, Boxing etc all pretty much come under the same banner just with different rules.

Thats why you see as a whole the fight industry is dead over there. Its not like MMA is dead but kickboxing is hot.

Still to this the day the mainstream sports media in the UK do not give a damn about MMA.

Yes scurla, you are right, it's a troll thread. :-(

Clearly boxing is on a roll, and a new generation of young people are getting into it. Obviously the sport is really healthy, it's regaining its mainstream relevance, attracting lots of new fans and people are really getting excited about it. The big fights are all getting made and events like Wlad-Haye are enthralling lots of casual fans with their exciting action, stacked undercards, reasonable pricing and lack of years-long contract negotiations. And boxing gyms haven't been closing down all over the place in the last 10-15 years, they're popping up all over and lots of guys are interested to train in the sport. :good

Meanwhile, MMA's visibility has stagnated over the last decade, and is now declining week by week. You see less and less of it on TV, its mainstream profile is shrinking, you can't keep track of any of the fighters, all the undercards are full of embarrassing mismatches featuring prospects against anonymous cab drivers, and in general there seems to be no future for the sport whatsoever and no potential for growth. And of course in the States no major TV network wants to go near it.

You are right scurla, what was I thinking. :-(

I cant speak for everywhere but a gym in the north of scotland was turning people away every night it was so popular, couldnt see boxing classes doing so. I think a lot of people just do it as a hobby and tell people there a "cage fighter" though, theres apparently a lot of new faces regularly.
