How important is it to eat something after training?

I generally only eat after training if we're training in the day (now and again we'll train on a sunday morning). During the week training is in the evening, after I've already had dinner and I'm not usually hungry. I usually just have a cuple of big glasses of milk.

Am I making a mistake here regarding recovery?

Everyones different I get done training around 8 every night and am usually rather weak and built up some hunger. Ill take Whey Protein for recovery and around 10 ill have dinner.

  3. Your body is yearning for nutrition to help with a rebuild after you just destroyed it by your workout.

In saying that, in theory your diet should be full of useful nutrients so it's upto you.

If you're building muscle bodybuilders definitely recommend that you eat, and restock all building blocks for muscle after a workout.

Maybe just my opinion but I'd say everyone should eat something after training.

I would agree. We break down our bodies through training so the faster we recover the harder we can push ourselves come the next training session. So proper post nutrition is essential to aid the recovery process.

  7. i agree you. who doesnt want to eat after a training session anyway? the first thing i do is goto the fridge.

I'm not that knowledgeable but i try and learn from teaching.

anyway, whats 12pounds. google says 5 kilos . Are you already fit and in shape? I'm not experienced in this but i'd say you have a shitload of work to do. Minimize your carbs even more, only consume good fats and oils. Eat many small meals a day. Like maybe 5-6 tiny portions to keep up energy. Lots of beans and steamed vegies. Lean meat, lots of water.

Keep the long distance cardio up. maybe someone who is more experienced can be better help. good luck though

You should have something after training to help your body recover. That said, milk is actually really good post workout. Google it and you can find that they say the ratio of carbs to protein is great for helping your body recover. Chocolate milk even better because of the bit of extra sugar gives your body a quick boost of energy.

As for not eating after training if your trying to lose weight: It's a good idea. If you eat a bunch right before you go to bed it's just going to sit in you and not get burned off. Have a protein shake when you're finished training to start repairing muscles. If you are starving and need to have food, eat a dish of cottage cheese which has casien protein that is absorbed slower by your body than whey protein. Plenty of water too after training. Get rehydrated and it will fill you up so you won't want to eat.

Good advice from right hooker. If you don't eat before training in the morning, you will be in a glycogen depleted state. Performance will suffer, but weight loss will be increased as less glycogen in blood to burn meaning you switch to utilising fat quicker. Also he is spot on with cottage cheese. I eat it every night before bed as it is digested released much slower (low glycemic load).

Some good feedback on this guys thanks. So the general consensus is I would benefit from eating something but I'm not exactly harming myself by drinking Milk and lots of water (which i find fills me up anyway), right?

Yeah, you want to give your body nutrition to help the recovery process, but you don't want to eat too much after training (assuming you train in the evening) and go to bed on a full stomach especially if you are trying to lose weight.

its important. you should be eating every couple hours anyway, but definitely post-workout too. It doesn't have to be anything fancy either. A fruit smoothie mixed with protein (yogurt, whey, etc) would do or even chocolate milk and a banana. I work 10 hours a day doing manual labor and sometimes workout on top of it so essentially im "working out" all day long and definitely need the food to recover and stay energized. I'm only 150 and I eat probably about 3500 calories a day on average just for maintenance. Your body needs all the necessary nutrients and minerals to stay strong, so make sure that your entire diet gives you what you need (sometimes cheating is essential for caloric needs) but make sure you get your fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats on top of that. For extra carbs you can always aim for whole grains - especially quinoa and unprocessed oatmeal. Diet can make a big difference, but everyone still needs to have some cheat foods/drink to enjoy life. Just make sure that you are getting your quality foods in as well.

I'm usually very hungry after training so that means I need food.
