Jack Johnson may seem like a curious choice but here is my rational. I am did not face much derision if any at all in the classic section, of which I am a regular, of this site.

Below is, My reason for Jack Johnson in the top ten over guys like Pep, Duran, etc.

IMO, Johnson was also the Greatest world champion, up until Joe Louis, reigning for 7 years. One top of that he was Colored champion from 1903 until he won the World title in 1908. I think Tommy Burns and Marvin Hart would not be in the Heavyweight Championship books if there was no color bar. Johnson maybe wins the title as early as 1905 from Jefferies which I would consider the true being of his prime and held it beating all the colored fighters and all of the white fighters like he did reguardless. He would have been the champion beating Langford, Jennette, and McVey and the rest of the white fighters he did beat defending the title 25 times and reigning for 12 years.

Essentially this is what did happen. I feel like one could make a claim that Johnson's total title reign is the greatest in boxing history including Joe Louis. His World title reign alone was better than all until Joe Louis and I would say he started his reign closing out his prime.

    Thoughts?

Hagler and Duran are great and I know that most people have them in thier top ten but, I see other fighters that accomplished more and would beat them outright.

Pernell? Top 35-40, maybe. Where would you put Pernell? I admire Pernell very much.

After that, I'm not sure. SRL might be next, Whitaker would definitely be top 20, as would Floyd.

    Mayweather's number #1

    ODH #2
    Cotto #3
    Hatton #4
    JMM #5
    Canelo #6
    SSM #7

So as you can see, Mayweather beat the best of the best, and that's a fact you Floyd haters can't dispute.

This is the list posted on the IBRO website. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this site, it's a site where boxing historian's gather historical and current information and
ask their members to vote on who the best boxers in various categories are. Naturally a fair amount of research is part of the selection process.

    http://www.ibroresearch.com/

    1. Sugar Ray Robinson
    2. Harry Greb
    3. Henry Armstrong
    4. Muhammad Ali (Tie)
    4. Joe Louis (Tie)
    6. Sam Langford
    7. Roberto Duran
    8. Benny Leonard
    9. Willie Pep
    10. Bob Fitzsimmons
    11. Joe Gans
    12. Ezzard Charles (Tie)
    12. Sugar Ray Leonard (Tie)
    14. Jimmy Wilde
    15. Eder Jofre
    16. Mickey Walker
    17. Archie Moore
    18. Jack Dempsey
    19. Jack Johnson
    20. Gene Tunney

Just missing the cut: Stanley Ketchel, Barbados Joe Walcott, Rocky Marciano, Tony Canzoneri, Barney Ross, Ike Williams, George Dixon, Sandy Saddler, Roy Jones Jr., and Larry Holmes.

The major negative is that these lists are from 2006.

Thank you for the response...BTW, you would not happen to have your top 20-25 lying around would you. I checked around this thread and did not see it but, I did see you critiques.

    Thanks.
