I was stunned by this fight. Liakhovich absolutely schooled Helenius for the majority of the bout. I like both fighters quite a bit, but the official scoring and some of those in the boxing media are way, way off on this bout. Liakhovich made Helenius look like he was a toughman contestant. That is the best I can ever recall Liakhovich fighting. Sadly, for him, he wore down as he has in the past. Probably a good amount of that had to do with the nose. Still, give Helenius credit. After getting absolutely outclassed in this matchup, he found a way to win. That's a great testament to his persistence. My card and notes: R01 ----> 10-9 SL --- Slow round. R02 ----> 10-9 SL --- Good SL double jab, movement. RH still has to figure it out, wait for SL to slow R03 ----> 10-9 SL --- RH cant find his comfort zone because SL movement, jab. SL may have broken nose R04 ----> 10-9 SL --- If SL's nose holds up, RH is in trouble. SL durable, conditioning is actually .................................... really good and RH getting worn down. Holyfield impressed. SL at best .................................... here. Showing explosiveness, too. If had big power, wow. Good bounce .................................... in his legs, good in-out movement, etc R05 ----> This content is protected --- Better. SL tiring a bit. Could be nose. RH must take the loop out of his .................................... punches, and SL's punch resistance is frustrating RH. RH is getting .................................... schooled in this fight on how to get to next level. Excellent SL .................................... body punching R06 ----> 10-9 SL --- SL is just punking RH. Timing him with hard shots. Like zero respect. Wow. .................................... He's making RH look like a chump amateur. Amazing. R07 ----> 10-9 SL --- SL's wife or whatever looks hot R08 ----> This content is protected --- SL knocked down at end of round, after RH clowned again for most of the round. .................................... He's just following SL around the ring and was fortunate .................................... there with the knockdown. SL took some big shots. .................................... RH cant deal with SL's movement, style R09 ----> HELENIUS WINS BY TKO; caught SL and just kept pounding. Wow. 6:50pm ET end. ............................... x .................................... Helenius' girl is cute; Holyfield perplexed; uppercut started it all. .................................... Give RH credit -- his power is legit and he stayed with it. For SL, an old .................................... bugaboo of fading later in fights Me: 77-74 SL
I had Helenius winning by at least 3 rounds prior to the KO. Very close rounds minds, each round that I had Helenuis winning was by about 70% in his favour which isn't much in boxing terms.
Apparently I missed a bunch of clean body shots by Liakhovich in the overall uneventful first round, as literally everyone except me gave it to him. I'll have to watch it again and see if my score comes up any different. So 77-74 at the time of the stoppage, but it could have been 78-73 with Liakhovich getting the 1st. (pending review)
Great stuff, IB. Thanks! I'm watching UFC right now so can't post a ton at the moment. I was SO impressed with how Liakhovich fought here. He dominated Helenius in a way I didn't think he could at this point in his career. Tough loss for Sergei, but he's had at least one of those before (Briggs). I like both fighters. Helenius really put it together at the end when he had to, and after being soundly beaten to that point. Props to him for being able to do so. That's a good sign.
I didn't keep score, but most of the first seven rounds looked close enough to go either way. I probably would have leaned toward Helenius because he landed the cleaner punches in most of those rounds. Nonetheless, until the 8th, Helenius was not in control of the fight; he was struggling. Liakhovich was bulling him around, and roughing him up on the inside. If Liakhovich were a stronger puncher, he would have knocked Helenius out. Sergei's lack of true power kept Helenius in the fight.
You're obviously not the only one who saw this, Manning. I saw a completely different fight. But Helenius made it all moot anyways. Props to him -- he should learn a lot from this experience! :thumbsup
I had Liakhovich by a couple of rounds, but I wasn't strictly scoring, just watching the fight. For a guy who's fought 15 fights, Helenius is remarkably poised. And the guy knows how to finish a fighter.
You care too much about who wins more rounds in the beginning of the fight. It only matters who is ahead after 12 rounds.
