I was expecting it No way was Sergey Kovalev going to get a decision over Ward in a match promoted by Box Nation & in Vegas. Not one person in gym here had Ward winning and many are Ward fans
Harold Lederman got it right for once. The consistency in Lederman is that he over values fighters that go forward without regard for the effectiveness of the punches being landed. In the case of Kovalev-Ward, I felt Kovalev's punches were cleaner, harder, and just outright more effective than Ward's. Ward did find a home for a good jab in the latter half of the fight, but anyone that scored all these latter half rounds for Ward, take a look back at these rounds.......everytime Ward landed clean snapping jabs, Kovalev always had a response to it with snapping jabs of his own to even things up. Kovalev's jabs were moving Ward, it was a power jab. At least with the fans who scored for Ward, I really think that after witnessing how little Ward did through the first half, they then start to over credit anything good Ward was doing and ignoring the the work and punches Kovalev was landing.
I felt it was a close-ish fight and thought that there was a real possibility that one judge had it for Ward or a draw, but I was pretty sure that Kovalev was going to remain the champion. When the announcer read 3x 114-113 it instantly struck me that they gave it to Ward and I was only having DLH-Sturm in mind before they announced the winner. Obviously, when they announced Ward the winner I was very disappointed, having felt that there was no way a champion could lose like that after having won 7 rounds in my opinion. Later on, HBO were talking about 3 American judges, referee etc, so obviously it made me think about it and suspect that something was seriously wrong. Either way, it's in the past now so the only thing we can do is look forward to the rematch and hope that everything goes fair and transparent.
I knew there's gonna be a lot of wannabe judges that will try to score BS scores against Ward. I knew there's gonna be a lot of cry babies
I was at Jack Dempsey's. Everyone around me (people I don't know) seemingly had Ward by a point. People politely cheered after the decision. I realized that the internet was crying when I got home.
I really like what you said in that 3rd paragraph. I believe that's exactly what happened. They saw Ward coming back into the fight , winning rnds, momentum changing , landing good punches ,standing up to Kovalev. They were in awe of him . Definitely. But While in awe of him , they very likely were dismissing all of Kovalev activity like you said. People are going to see what they want to see . That's just how it is . NOW... for the other half of Wards fans who claimed they scored it closely for Ward . Listen . There's a lot of Ward fans on this forum right now as we speak that are well aware that Ward lost the fight . They know it . But the loyalty and love they have for this fighter will not allow them to admit he lost . It's just not going to happen . So they will continue to just go along with the decision and stick to " It could have went either way "
Relief at the right decision being made, and admiration for Ward being able to fight his way out of that hole. Ward is an ATG, a true champion.
