Might be because Barker wasnt so willing to wave his chin in the air for Martinez. In all seriousness how many punches did Martinez land clean up until the tenth?
I don't remember what I had now but I think I had Martinez taking over by the stoppage. Either way, I also felt that Barker did a better job with Martinez. Macklin gave a good account of himself and I had him losing clearly, but he showed me some nice moves and not too bad a game plan, really, discounting 20-20 hindsight. But Barker seemed to me to pick a perfect strategy, but got hesitant of countering later on and slowed his activity too much. I can see 4 or 5 for Barker, from what I remember thinking about it, but I couldn't see why people thought Macklin was so close.
Macklin was brave or stupid and tried to box Sergio.I think anyone who is going to beat him will have to foul and hold and use barkers tight guard only trading when cards are dealt in your favour Martinez is very good and there is no blue print I think if barker had gone 12 he would have had more big fights,I think the ko in America was seen as weak whereas macklin was willing to fight on no matter what, add in an Irish connection and macklin is a hbo fighter
I understand Macklin being a bigger potential draw than Barker due to the way that Martinez fight was promoted in New York, but I absolutely don't get this idea that he fought any less conservatively than Barker. Both guys were pretty defensively-oriented, but Barker was the one who landed the better punches IMO.
Barker's awesome, best MW in the UK. I really like the UK MW trio of Macklin, Barker, Murray. very good fighters the UK should get behind more.
