Hard to compare Les Darcy, Young Griffo etc (who naturally I never saw) to Johnny Famechon & Lionel Rose (who I saw as a kid) and the later day champs such as Fenech, Tszyu, Darchinyan etc. Did get down the best Aussies in each weight division during my time watching (late 60’s til present): HW 1/ Steve ACZEL 2/ Dean WATERS 3/ Kali MEEHAN - hard to split this lot. CW 1/ Glen KELLY 2/ Doug SAM 3/ Daniel ROWSELL - not much between these either. LHW 1/ Jeff HARDING 2/ Bobby DUNLOP 3/ Paul BRIGGS - Harding the stand-out here (more courage than brains, world title etc). SMW 1/ Anthony MUNDINE 2/ Danny GREEN 3/ Guy WATERS - Mundine the stand-out and will add to that (particularly if he starts fighting better opponents). MW 1/ Tony MUNDINE (Snr) 2/ Ken SALISBURY 3/ Daniel GEALE – Tony Mundine was very much world class and would have won title but for a legend in Monzon (definately more talented than Anthony though Anthony can still add to what he's achieved). LMW 1/ Rocky MATIOLLI 2/ Charkey RAMON 3/ Troy WATERS - all class acts these 3. Matiolli won a world title. Ramon only lost once, was Commonwealth champ when they meant about as much as the current day world championships, and was capable of winning a world title. Waters was genuine world class. WW 1/ Jeff MALCOLM 2/ Frank ROPIS 3/ Brian JANSEEN – Malcolm & Ropis were warriors. Malcolm’s longitivety was quite amazing. LWW 1/ Kostya TSZYU 2/ Lester ELLIS 3/ Hec THOMPSON - Tszyu & Ellis both won world championships. Thompson was world class but ran into a legend in Roberto Duran (timing can be as important as class). LW 1/ Michael KATSIDIS 2/ Billy MOELLER 3/ Tony MILLER - Katsidis is a warrior, has held a world title & will get more chances if he learns to protects himself better. SFW 1/ Barry MICHAEL 2/ Robbie PEDEN 3/ Brian SCHOFIELD - Michael the stand-out with long record and late title stolen from a young Lester Ellis. Peden accomplished plenty too. FW 1/ Johnny FAMECHON 2/ Bobby DUNNE 3/ Lucky GATTELARI - How good was Fammo!! Dunne was Commonwealth champ when they meant almost as much as current day world championships SBW 1/ Jeff FENECH 2/ Nedal HUSSEIN 3/ Daniel IANNAZZO - Not a strong field to choose from. Fenech was a gun & but for sore hands could have achieved even more. Iannazzo has enormous potential. BW 1/ Paul FERRERI 2/ Lionel ROSE 3/ Brian ROBERTS - Ferreri was Commonwealth champ for years & years, and only a legend in Carlos Zarate stopped him winning world title. Rose won a world title. Roberts was better than his record suggests & would have been Commonwealth champ for years but for Ferreri. SFlyW 1/ Vic DARCHINYAN 2/ and 3/ no obvious choices - Darchinyan dominated this division until recently. May yet win another world title. FlyW 1/ Henry NISSEN 2/ Hussy Hussein 3/ Steve Bell - Nissen didn’t campaign long but was Commonwealth champ when it meant plenty. Hard yakka! Bet I missed some out entirely, and there are probably arguments for all sorts of changes. Hard also to confine some to their correct weight division when they won titles at different limits.

Nice stuff couldofbeen. Imagine some of those guys against middeweights Sands, Ron Richards and Darcy or the welters you chose against Jack Carroll George Barnes and Burns etc and lightweights such as Patrick, Bracken and Hassen. Would have been awesome fights. Dino
I am a pom, so it is probably none of my business, but I cannot see any mention of who I think is possibly Australia's finest fighter of the 20th century; Jimmy Carruthers.
