thats what i've always said about UFC...its just a bunch of guys who tried boxing but couldnt cut it...so now tey tried this...
There are a lot more American MMA fighters who were not good enough to make an Olympic/World team in amateur wrestling after their collegiate days than amateur boxers who couldn't make it as a pro.......So it's a big misnomer to generalize and say that MMA athletes are guys who could not make it in boxing.....
75% of UFC fighters would get laughed out of a boxing gym, most of them punch like an overweight 40 yearold after happy hour. It obviously takes alot of skill to do what they do, but when it comes to punching technique the majority of them are jokes.
The UFC have some great talent and you know what the best thing about the UFC is? It's that their fighters aren't afraid to lose; a loss doesn't mean the end to them. Great match-ups are made and most the fighters never argue over who they will be fighting. This was personified when Hughes stepped in to take on Alves at short notice. Even tho Hughes is a UFC legend he didn't think twice about getting in the ring with an awesome young talent in Alves, he didn't think 'oh i need to protect my record', he thought 'i need to make this fight for the fans'. It gets to me that most boxers don't share the same mentality.
And they would KILL boxers in the ring. Again, boxing is a limited subset of fighting. People like to see the fists, so the theory is, take out the rest and you have an exciting fight. Bhop/Cal? That fight seriously needed a few knees and take downs.
All a good powerful boxer needs is one punch, and say goodnight to any MMA fighter. Take Lidell(spell check) for instance, he was supposed good striker and what not, Rampage hit him with a shot my grandma seen coming, he melted like an icecream cone, and Rampage got nothing on a prime Tyson, Wlad, Foreman, Peter etc... In a boxing match a UFC guy stands almost no chance of winning against an elite boxer, while a boxer on the other hand at least has punchers chance of winning in a MMA match, thats just my opinion.
In the few matchups I've seen the boxer just gets his legs kicked out from under him. The first thing a boxer has to do is change his stance. He can't keep a leg forward. Now, his punch is altered.
I know Shannon Briggs won at least one MMA match, I also heard Tommy Morrison had a few as well. I'm not saying I would favor a boxer in the octagon, but I do feel he stands a better chance of winning, than does a MMA guy in a boxing ring.
Shannon to my knowledge only fought 1 bout for the K1.Thats not MMA. The guy he fought also was neither a boxer nor a kickboxer. Tommy Morrison also has only had 1 MMA bout in the "cage". BUT the rules were adapted quite drastically and it was more like a boxing match with 4oz gloves.
Well, I have no problem with that assessment, but it is like asking a guy to use 1/4 of the tools he is used to having. And on top of that, make him change that tool. Yes. Boxers concentrate on one small area of fighting. They damned well should be much better at it. And a punch is always a dangerous weapon in a fight.
